No and Yes...: Once you have a tonsillectomy, you can't get tonsillitis anymore. Unfortunately, there are other structures in the throat that can give you a 'sore throat', including the adenoid and the lingual (tongue) tonsils. I haven't been coughing, but suffer from tonsillitis! I want my tonsils out I get it twice maybe 3 times a year ?

Depends: The most recent guidelines for tonsillectomy based upon frequency of tonsillitis are: 7 episodes in 12 months or 5 episodes per year for 2 years or 3 episodes per year for 3 years or 4 episodes of strep in a year.
