Can You Have The Flu Without A Cough
Can you have the flu, without any cold, cough, or congestion symptoms? I have chills, fever, listlessness, no energy. It started with vomiting, but none since.
The most common symptoms of flu according to the center for disease control are:
-fever (usually high)
-nausea, vomiting or diarrhea
-runny nose or congestion
unfortunately, it is difficult to diagnose the flu based on symptoms alone since many other illnesses can cause similar symptoms. Most viral illnesses start to improve after 3-4 days. If you are not staring to feel better in this time frame, you should give your doctor a call for an appointment. Good luck! ...Read more
The cough reflex is a protective mechanism that uses muscles in your throat and chest to expel mucous and saliva that may contain pathogens that would otherwise possibly be inhaled via aerosol or to expel pathogens infecting the throat and respiratory system. Les likely w/o cough: A significant non-productive cough is one of the main features of a true influenza viral infection (the flu), along with abrupt onset of muscle aches, fever, fatigue. Sore throat is not a necessary symptom of the flu, but lack of a cough makes it less likely. Commercial tests for influenza virus, should be able to detect infection in two days, but they care not 100% accurate. ...Read more

Nausea is not...: ...A symptom of influenza. It can be a symptom of any number of dozens of other viral infections, which are often blamed for being "the flu". Flu is bad:
Influenza this year and most years is a very nasty experience and it lasts five to ten days.
Any infection may be followed by a period of convalescence, something known to us all but which is poorly understood. Rest, fluids, Sambucol: Western medicine does not have effective flu treatments (Im not impressed with Tamiflu). Drink lots of water. Flu can be severe: If you're having such severe symptoms, you need to go back and have your oxygen levels checked. Particularly the test that we call an 'ambulatory pulse ox' - they need to walk you and see what your oxygen levels drop to. Based on that, you may need to be hospitalized. I suspect also you've injured one of the small muscles that connects the ribs (from coughing). Flu can be very dangerous. Go to ER ...Read more

A complication of the flu is pneumonia which can lead to discolored sputum, shortness of breath, persistent fever, chest discomfort, etc. A chest x-ray can identify the pneumonia and a sputum culture can identify the bacteria responsible. It would be treated with antibiotics. So, see your doctor if you have these symptoms. ...Read more
