Bacterial infections of the sinus is often by organisms which "reside" there and are "activated" by a viral infection of the throat/nose upper airway. Hope this helps Dr Z ...Read more

Can sinusitis on one side alter smell and taste? I can smell/taste some things, but not all and it comes and goes. I also have no congestion.

Yes it can: Chronic sinusitis is often associated with smell and taste impairment and unlike acute sinusitis often not associated with nasal congestion (which however might have initiated the acute infection -> chronic). ...Read more

Congestion: I'd recommend using an OTC decongestant as long as you don't have any blood pressure problems. Also, using an OTC antihistamine would be beneficial. Warm salt water gargles. Sinus rinses also help. Using a humidifier. Hope this helps. ...Read more

I feel like i have sinusitis. I have facial pain, swelling, congestion, for more than a year. When does facial swelling go down after meds?

I was diagnosed with sinusitis. I have sinuse pressure and pain. My voice is closed but I don't have congestion. I'm afraind that its not it.no ctscan?

Uncomplicated: For uncomplicated sinusitis in allow risk patient, initially CT may not be needed and the fair step is to proceed with therapy, including abx, decongestions etc. In an event there are complications and or you have a complex medical history CT is needed. Loss of your voice is more laryngitis, and not the sinus. Take rest, see your MD if you need abx, may not need and take fluids. ...Read more

I have post nasal drip and temple pain on both side of my head. i had sinusitis too but the pain on my face is gone. no congestion. what is this?

I have post nasal drip and temple pain on both side of my head. i had sinusitis too but the pain on my face is gone. no congestion. what is this?

Rhinitis vs Headache: Post nasal drip, sinusitis, and facial pain/pressure can be due to poorly controlled allergic/non-allergic rhinitis. Daily nasal sprays important to maintain control, can use chlorpheniramine at night for worsening drip. See Allergist to determine sensitivities for avoidance measures. Temple pain could be related to tension-type or migraine headaches depending on presentation, not typical sinus HA ...Read more

What's the best OTC medication for nasal congestion due to sinusitis infection?

What's the best OTC medication for nasal congestion due to sinusitis infection?

Just the opposite: Sinusitis or inflammation of the paranasal sinuses (there are 4 paired sinuses) does not cause nasal congestion. The opposite is true. That is, nasal congestion leads to sinus inflammation. It is true that they very often occur together, but the nasal congestion is the first event. Otc treatment may include saline (salt water) irrigations of the nose, a netti-pot and a decongestant. ...Read more

Can there be chronic allergic sinusitis with only significant nasal congestion and malaise without any apparent mucus or nasal discharge?

Can there be chronic allergic sinusitis with only significant nasal congestion and malaise without any apparent mucus or nasal discharge?

Yes: You are basically describing chronic sinusitis. Patients with chronic sinusitis typically don't have the nasal discharge that you get with allergies or acute sinusitis. I am recovering from a sinusitis(2weeks), and have hardly any nasal congestion, but my cough doesn't go away. Im exhausted?

Partial recovery: You may only be partially improved. Depending upon your anatomy sinus infections can sometimes require longer courses of therapy. Sometime antibiotics need to be changed. Also, sinusitis can trigger asthma. The asthma can make you cough. Sometimes antibiotics used to treat sinusitis cause stomach upset and laryngeal reflux which also can make you cough. I recommend you talk with your ENT doctor. ...Read more

Symptoms: nasal congestion and very bad smell from nose, no sinusitis but enlarged turbinates. Could surgery help eliminate the smell?

Not sure: Turbinate surgery is performed by a variety of techniques to improve breathing and I am not sure the odor would disappear. You need a nasal endoscopy to rule out an infection in the nose. If you already have had such a procedure and everything was normal and sinus disease has been ruled out, think of high reflux of gastric acid, so called LPR (laryngo-pharyngeal reflux). ...Read more
