I've had my mirena (levonorgestrel) 4 years now when me and my boyfriend have sex he says my strings are poking him and hurts is that a bad thing?

It's Bad for him! : I'm curious if you're suddenly having any pain or cramping with sex or at any other time. If he didn't notice the strings before and is now, it may mean that your iud moved. The strings were cut too short originally. As long as you can feel the string most likely you are fine, the check a urine pregnancy test and see your provider. ...Read more

As soon as you...: I tell the patients to wait at least a day. Your uterus can be crampy for a few days after insertion. The cramps are not pleasant and can cause pain during sex. Why have it been so uncomfortable when I have sex on the mirena (levonorgestrel) since 2010 but never had discomfort before until these couple of weeks

Why have it been so uncomfortable when I have sex on the mirena (levonorgestrel) since 2010 but never had discomfort before until these couple of weeks

Discomfort : Discomfort during sex can be caused by irritation to the vagina or vulva and insufficient lubrication. Hormone levels can change the bodies own natural lubrication amounts. Try to use additional lubricant which may help. A different position may be more comfortable. If a patient had continued pain or swelling then they may need an evaluation. ...Read more

I had a d & c done on friday 6/19 and i got the mirena (levonorgestrel) iud on 6/25. Is it safe to have sex after a week?

No: Two things here to consider. First, no sex whatsoever until at least two weeks out from D&C (same with tampons and douche). 2. No unprotected sex until your IUD string check around 6 weeks post placement as some women will expel the IUD and not know it ...Read more

Me and my sons father had sex about 5 days ago and we used protection but we plan to have sex again unprotected is that okay with the mirena (levonorgestrel)?

Stopped mirena (levonorgestrel) IUD and started progestin bc pills. Is it ok to have sex without condom in the transition? Did not miss any days and took pills on time

7 days: Typically, i tell patients to wait 7 days after starting a new pack of birth control pills before having unprotected sex. In your case, you had the Mirena (levonorgestrel) and you didn't skip a day, and you're 46 years old, so chances are super slim of pregnancy. However, if you want to be extra cautious, take the progestin pill for 7 days and then have unprotected intercourse. If you had sex... Don't worry! ...Read more

Yes, but caution: You can have sex the same day and the Mirena (levonorgestrel) will be protective against pregnancy. In mar. 2015 it will be 5 years ive had my mirena (levonorgestrel) it hurts my bf during intercourse all the time i have no insurance i want it out can my bf remove it?

Not a good idea: It's not a good idea having your bf try to remove the IUD. If you had the IUD for 5 years without problems, and your bf had no problems, there is no reason, why all of a sudden there should be a problem. If it is a new boyfriend, he may not know how an IUD works, where exactly it is located, and therefore think, he feels the IUD. ...Read more

I've had my mirena (levonorgestrel) for 2 years, am still able to feel the threads when I check. I had intercourse 7 days ago and he pulled out. Should I be concerned?

I don't see why: Since you are using one of the most effective methods of contraception and you can "feel the threads", your risk of pregnancy is really quite low (less than 1%). If you and your sex partner do not have any sexually transmissible infection, your risk of a pelvic infection are also quite remote. If you need to be reassured, consult a Gyn to be screened and ask your man to use condoms. ...Read more
