How do you keep a toddler with a stomach virus hydrated?

How do you keep a toddler with a stomach virus hydrated?

Sips of liquids-: The key is how much vomiting they are doing. If vomiting, wait 2-3 hours and give "small" (1/2 oz) amounts of clear liquids. Don't let them "gulp too fast"-if it stays down then repeat every 30 minutes. Once 3 or 4 liquid feeds have not been vomited, slowly increase the volume every 30 minutes. If no vomit for 3-4 hours then start the brat diet for diarrhea-bannans, rice, apple, toast. Patience. ...Read more

Ginger (Definition)

Human studies suggests that 1g daily of ginger may be effective for nausea and vomiting in pregnant women when used for short periods (no longer than 4 days). Several studies have found that ginger is better than placebo in relieving morning sickness. In a small study of 30 pregnant women with severe vomiting, those who took 1 gram of ginger every day for 4 days reported more relief from vomiting than those who took placebo. In a larger study of 70 pregnant women with nausea and vomiting, those who received a similar dosage of ginger felt less nauseous and did not vomit as much as those who received placebo. Pregnant women should ask their doctor before taking ginger, and should be careful not take more ...Read more

My 2 y/o had stomach virus last Thursday. I got it last night (Mon). Is it possible for me to give it back to him? His tummy is gurgling.

No: One person can give another a stomach virus once, but the receiving person is unlikely to catch it from the giving person again after only a short time. That is because the receiving person either still has the virus or currently has lots of antibodies to block the virus. More likely, this child hasn't fully recovered and may be having some off and on symptoms from the original stomach virus. ...Read more

My 2 year old child has yellow pasty poop. What is the cause for this? He had a stomach virus recently, but he had this several weeks ago as well for about 2-3 days. It went away. And it just came back again.

Good: Good news! The only stool colors we get really concerned about are red (blood from colon), black (blood from small intestine or stomach), or white (liver is not working well). Colors such as brown, yellow, orange, green, blue, or even purple (beets) can all be normal and usually associated with diet. If he has a persistent change in his stool habits, you should contact his physician since this could be a sign of an underlying disorder, but a one-time strange stool that is not red, black or white is usually of no concern.

If he is having continued diarrhea, or a change in color unrelated to diet, give his doctor a call. They may want to check his stool for bacterial, viruses, parasites, and other things to give clues as to why he is having this ongoing problem. Good luck! ...Read more
