Can a four year old take children's pepto bismol (bismuth subsalicylate) and if so how much? She weighs 54lbs. Thanks.
Depends: Regular pepto contains Bismuth Subsalicylate which is an Aspirin product linked to liver failure and brain damage in kids, a syndrome called reye syndrome. This is rare but regular pepto is not recommended for this reason. The company makes a chewable tablet with no salicylate (children's pepto)which can be used at a dose of 1 tablet for a kid of 4. ...Read more

Hello Doctor. How are you? I have a few pepto bismol (bismuth subsalicylate) tablets that expired one year ago.I have a really bad stomach ache.. Is it safe to take a pill?
Would use new: generally good policy not to take expired medications, and I would get fresh antacids, or even try household baking soda if you feel this is from stomach acid. If recurrent, see MD. Ulcers (?aspirin/motrin), infection (e.g. H pylori), gall stones, etc may need to be considered. Seek MD esp if red flags eg increasing nausea/vomit, blood/melena (black stools), anemia, weight loss, fever ...Read moreSee 2 more doctor answers
