Should someone with a history of hemolytic uremic syndrome as a child follow up with a nephrologist as a adult? Even if they're not having problems

Should someone with a history of hemolytic uremic syndrome as a child follow up with a nephrologist as a adult? Even if they're not having problems

Not necessarily: If your primary care doctor has checked your kidney function and it is normal then you probably do not need to see a nephrologist. If there is any residual kidney damage from the HUS then it would be good to see a nephrologist. Many people recover fully from HUS and do not need ongoing care by a kidney specialist. ...Read more

If someone is susceptible to fungal and yeast infections ... should he stay away from this specific type of probiotic called Saccharomyces Boulardii + MOS 5billions. I have a feeling it is making it worse. Please advise me thank you.

If someone is susceptible to fungal and yeast infections ... should he stay away from this specific type of probiotic called Saccharomyces Boulardii + MOS 5billions. I have a feeling it is making it worse. Please advise me thank you.

Unlikely the reason:: There have been reports of fungemia(fungus in the blood stream) from S.boulardii but In most cases, patients who developed fungemia in the setting of probiotic administration had severe comorbidities, were on immunosuppressive medication, had recent surgical intervention, or had recent prolonged hospitalization. Routine fungal infections of skin, vagina, hair or nails are not a contraindication. ...Read more

If someone has a medical condition known as irritable bowel syndrome and have been told to avoi coffee, would it be forever or just for a while?D

Again I suggest: As i've mentioned before i discourage excessive caffeine intake when dealing with any GI disorders as well as excessive alcohol intake. And that is a lifetime adjustment you need to make in order to keep things under proper control. Starbuck's hates me but oh well, so be it. ...Read more

Is it safe to take propranolol for Wolff Parkinson white syndrome? It works well & decreased SVT episodes by 80% already.

Is it safe to take propranolol for Wolff Parkinson white syndrome? It works well & decreased SVT episodes by 80% already.

Generally no: This is a very interesting question. If you truly have WPW, your management (& answer to such a question) should be by your cardiologist. If it is known that you have only orthodromic AVRT (genarally a concealed accessory pathway) then propranolol could be used safely. Otherwise, it could pose danger if you develop atrial fib. However, the modern treatment for WPW w/ frequent SVT is ablation. ...Read more

Can fifth disease in children cause bad diarrhea? What are some home remedies I can use for her rash? When will it be gone? Child is 2.

No diarrhea: I cannot recall ever seeing a case where diarrhea was involved. They can occur simultaneously for a number of reasons but it is not a listed symptom. I would ignore the rash.It comes up from the inside so outside creams or treatments don't help. The rash may flare with a warm bath or play outside and can persist for weeks. They are not contagious when the rash appears. ...Read more

When pregnant, what are long-term risks to an unborn child of working in a pediatric office? (like being exposed to flu and other contagious diseases)

When pregnant, what are long-term risks to an unborn child of working in a pediatric office? (like being exposed to flu and other contagious diseases)

That's a tough one,: Because you can get your torch titers & take the flu-mist before you conceive, wash your hands till they're raw, & still get sneezed, pooped or peed on with goodness knows what. In light of the recent danish article on increased incidence of autism in children whose moms had a viral illness with fever for a week, not always the 'flu, i'd say it's a personal decision till we know more. ...Read more

My mom got a blood disease called polycythemia vera. May i know the price for interferon-alpha which can be used to cure this disease. Also could you recommend me some brand of this medicine?

She needs a speciali: A good specialist is what she needs first. You should seek the advice of a hematologist who works in a major cancer center. P. Vera has some new treatments(jak2 inhibitors) which are in clinical trials. Interferon( has some activity and can be beneficial but it is an older treatment which has many serious side effects and it is very expensive .Too alpha-2b) also called introna) ask for this bran. ...Read more

Why is there such a big deal about administering antibiotics to elderly people once they satisfy the conditions for suspected sepsis? Could a delay of 4-5 hours before giving antibiotics seriously be life-threatening or it this simply being cautious?

Why is there such a big deal about administering antibiotics to elderly people once they satisfy the conditions for suspected sepsis? Could a delay of 4-5 hours before giving antibiotics seriously be life-threatening or it this simply being cautious?

Infections still kil: There is a huge benefit to starting antibiotics when a life-threatening condition like sepsis is diagnosed. A delay in diagnosis can mean increased chance of death; while antibiotics alone sometime are insufficient to stop sepsis, doctors don't want to be caught afterwards in a "coulda, shoulda" situation. It's far better to stop antibiotics if we're wrong than to withhold it if it was needed. GL. ...Read more

Can a child get reye's syndrome from only taking peto twice ?

Can a child get reye's syndrome from only taking peto twice ?

Not enough data: Reye syndrome was a pattern starting with the flu or chickenpox treated with aspirin products.A fraction of these went on to liver failure and death. You have not given a reason why you gave the pepto. Reye syndrome has almost disappeared after we stopped using salycelates with kids.I avoid adult pepto in kids (there is a salycelate free kids pepto) ...Read more

If you have had Steven Johnson syndrome from an NSAID, can that person ever take a different kind of NSAID in the future?

If you have had Steven Johnson syndrome from an NSAID, can that person ever take a different kind of NSAID in the future?

NSAID allergy: Stevens Johnson syndrome can be very serious, sometimes even fatal. And your next reaction might be even more dangerous, e.g. anaphylaxis or angioedema. Most NSAIDs probably would not cross react with one another, but it may be possible. An allergy specialist might be able to provide better information, or even test you (e.g. skin tests) with various NSAIDs. Until then, best to avoid them all. ...Read more
