RELAX: If a culture grows tuberculosis it means that treatment is automatic. BUT NOTICE: in many places more than half the people are COLONIZED [carriers] of staph bacteria, including MRSA, with no symptoms. If you have no boils or other infections you need do NOTHING! ...Read more

I shook somebody's hand who had mrsa in leg. Didn't wash hands because couldn't and smoked a cig after. Could I get it in my mouth?

Probably not: This is a very frightening new situation indeed! As there's nothing certain, it makes no sense to worry backwards. Do be really careful in the future if you have occasion to interact w/ patients like this. (Also, some would say not to smoke). Obviously, if you notice symptoms, get an exam and inform the Dr of this episode. It's a low probability. Best! ...Read more

My boyfriend thinks he has mrsa. He had a dried cut on his lip and kissed me. He is now complaining of swelling on his face. Will I get mrsa from him?

R/O MRSA: MRSA IS A VERY AGGRESSIVE TYPE OF SKIN INFECTION. If he has it he is very sick right now and on very strong oral or IV ABS. IF THAT IS THE CASE, YOU NEED A NASAL CULTURE FOR MRSA TO MAKE SURE YOU ARE NOT A CARRIER.& you need to be treated with nasal Bactroban. You need to see a doctor get an exam a&discuss options. ...Read more

Is MRSA spread through saliva after treatment? Mom said not to share food with friend that had it in 2012, she works in medical, & says I will get it.

Not a risk: There should not be a risk of illness for contact with someone who was treated for MRSA in past, if they are not showing signs of illness now.
The bacteria in mrsa, "staph" is usually spread by skin to skin contact, especially with a wound or other infected area. ...Read more

Is it possible to get a MRSA staph infection in your inner vagina lip from a cut u got shaving? Especially since have had reaccurring MRSA for 6 years

Is it possible to get a MRSA staph infection in your inner vagina lip from a cut u got shaving? Especially since have had reaccurring MRSA for 6 years

Yes: You can get MRSA anywhere the skin gets broken, and many people have been colonized with MRSA so they get recurrent infections. If you have had that, then be sure to see you doctor, and you may need an infectious disease doctor, to treat you with the proper antibiotics. Your doctor might also culture your nasal passages maybe treat for carriage of MRSA in the nose. Go to your doctor! ...Read more

I have MRSA hives on arms and legs, back and now a ulcerated one on my vagina lip how likely is it that ill get sepsis?

MRSA treatment: Sepsis can occur but is less likely to happen if you get treated. Mrsa infections are usually treated with antibiotics. People with recurrent infections sometimes need decolonization. Chlorhexidine is a soap that can be used to decrease the load of MRSA on the skin and decrease risk of infections and sepsis. You should ask your doctor if this would be a good option for you. ...Read more

If my patient with MRSA, who sucks on her fingers, whacked my mouth with her wet fingers. Could I contract it too?

If my patient with MRSA, who sucks on her fingers, whacked my mouth with her wet fingers. Could I contract it too?

Infection vs coloniz: Rather complicated question. 1st, MRSA is everywhere. 90% of hospitals can find MRSA on a surface somewhere if you take enough swabs. 2nd, MRSA colonization (on the skin) doesn't mean "contracting" an infection (symptoms). MRSA has to bypass skin & get into the blood. (An open cut or wound from her "whacking" can do it). Lastly, your immune system plays a role. Some are susceptible; others aren't. ...Read more

I'm a healthcare worker and my snot dripped into my babies mouth. If MRSA were to be living I my nose what will happen to the baby? She's 7 weeks.

I'm a healthcare worker and my snot dripped into my babies mouth. If MRSA were to be living I my nose what will happen to the baby? She's 7 weeks.

Digestion is great: Chances are the enzymes in babies saliva will begin neutralizing the material and it will be destroyed by acid when it gets to the stomach. MRSA doesn't survive the transit into the distal GI tract. I would be more concerned if you dripped it into her nose. Plan to modify your practices when dealing with baby. Wash hands well and ware a mask if you think you might carry something home from work. ...Read more

My friend recently got MRSA while he had it I had two cut in the corner of my mouth and I drank from his cup could I have MRSA the cut are really sore?

MRSA: The important thing lacking in this question if where did he have the MRSA? If he had a lesion in his mouth then yes. If he had a systemic infection then yes. If he had a boil on his butt then no. In other words, if you were directly inoculated to your cuts by his infection then you could get it otherwise it doesn't jump off of him to you. ...Read more

Dad has MRSA inf. Haven't came n2 direct contact but I have a boil around my mouth forming. Face swelling around site. Should I go see Dr and when?

Yes, go to doctor: MRSA is a bacterial infection that is easily spread, even without direct contact. It sounds like you have an infection forming which could spread on your face. Go see your doctor this week or go to an urgent care clinic if you can't get I right away. You may be prescribed antibiotics. ...Read more

I had Mrsa a 4 weeks ago in my finger had surgery and clyindomisin now I have c.diff and Mrsa on mouth how contagious am I and will Mrsa be elsewhere?

C. Diff spores: The problem with C diff is it can make spores, or little seeds that persist in the environment. Good to be extra careful not to spread them around in the home environment. You can only get C diff if taking antibiotics, so careful going forward. I wonder if that's a cold sore on ur lip not MRSA. You might still have MRSA colonization in ur nose. Can culture that 2 see. Developed mastitis with an abscess and MRSA. Received IV Vancomycin (5 months ago) currently root canal done on abscess tooth, what is the likelihood of MRSA moving to my mouth signs and symptoms to look for!

Possible, not likely: Staph (whether MRSA or non-MRSA types) is not a common cause of dental abscesses, although it could happen. All abscess symptoms are pretty much the same, no matter what bacteria are involved: swelling, pain, redness, and potentially draining pus. Discuss with your dentist and follow her advice if antibiotic treatment is prescribed. ...Read more

I had MRSA endocarditis about a year ago is severe head ache a symptom that the MRSA has returned if not what are simptoms?

Among others: Headache is one of many possible symptoms: vague general ones include fever, chills, poor appetite, weight loss, aches & pains, joint pain, night sweats, weakness & malaise. Cardiac symptoms may include shortness of breath, cough or chest pain. If all you have is headache, recurrent endocarditis would be unlikely, but you are right to consider the possibility. I would check with your doctor. ...Read more

My 4 yr old daughter complained about pain on her head. I opened up her hair and found white looks like a white pimple. I'm afraid it might be MRSA?

Don't worry.: If it looks like a pimple it probably is. These can sometimes occur on the head. Pimples do not generally need any treatment. Will heal on its own. If it gets large- more like a boil - it may need treatment. MRSA gets a lot of media attention but it is just staph aureus with resistance to some traditional antibiotics. The clever physician understands this and uses appropriate antibiotics. ...Read more

Small boil red penny size similar after two days. Had a head on it yesterday. Clinic said not mrsa: not worse after 2 days not hard pussy sound ok?

Cultured? Drained?: If the boil has not been cultured I do not know how they can say with certainty that it is not mrsa. That being said MRSA does tend to make more painful and rapidly increasing lesions. Interestingly, just draining them can frequently be adequate treatment however if antibiotics are not used then they do tend to recur. ...Read more

I cared for pt w/ MRSA in saliva 2 days ago, on contact precautions, no mask required. She breathed on my face. Now I have a cold. Could it be MRSA?

Unlikely: MRSA is not likely to cause a cold. You may have picked up a viral infection.
For good health - Have a diet rich in fresh vegetables, fruits, whole grains, milk and milk products, nuts, beans, legumes, lentils and small amounts of lean meats. Avoid saturated fats. Drink enough water daily, so that your urine is mostly colorless. Exercise at least 150 minutes/week and increase the intensity of exercise gradually. Do not use tobacco, alcohol, weed or street drugs in any form.
Practice safe sex, if you have sex.
Get HPV vaccine, if you are under 27 years of age. ...Read more

Can MRSA be spread through saliva? My infant daughter has it and she drools a lot from teething. Also what is the incubation period for MRSA? How long

MRSA: MRSA (methicillin resistant staph aureus) can be spread via saliva as well as other body fluids. You would be at additional risk for infection if breaks in your skin come in contact with your daughter's saliva. Incubation period for MRSA is one to ten days after entering skin breaks or damaged mucus membranes such as nose or mouth. Key to carefully wash hands after coming in contact w her saliva. ...Read more

A friend of mine had MRSA on her lip several months ago and was treated with antibiotics. I accidentally drank from her glass recently. Should I worry?

Little or no risk: For every person who has had a documented MRSA infection or is known to be carrying it, there are 10 or 20 others that you don't know about. This particular event is no higher risk than all the times to shake hands, socially kiss, or visit the homes of other entirely healthy people. Just use common sense hygiene but otherwise I wouldn't worry about it. ...Read more

Can my 17 month baby, who caught MRSA at birth in the hospital, give my unborn baby MRSA through his saliva through breastfeeding?

Can my 17 month baby, who caught MRSA at birth in the hospital, give my unborn baby MRSA through his saliva through breastfeeding?

No: Staph in some form will colonize newborn skin by a day or two of age. If MRSA is around it will do so, if not, another strain. Mrsa, will come and go with or without treatment and be replaced by other strains. Today > 70% of staph infections in or out of hospitals involve mrsa. I would not treat your older child like they have it forever. If s/he has repeated boils, have it treated and eliminated. ...Read more

I have had 3 bouts of mrsa, face n throat (along w cellulitis), once in lip absess and once in neck absess. Will this be a continual problem for me?

Try decolonization: It could be a recurrent problem as you are probably colonized with mrsa. See your doctor about an attempt at decolonization with Bactroban Nasal ointment, hibiclens soap shower and shampoo and possibly one of several antibiotics that obtain high nasal secretion levels such as minocycline, septra, (sulfamethoxazole and trimethoprim) or rifampin. Intimate contacts should have nasal MRSA screens and decolonization if positive. ...Read more
