Can You Get Meningitis If Your Eardrum Bursts And Infection Gets Into Your Brain
Infections are invasions of some other organism (fungus, bacteria, parasite) or viruses into places where they do not belong. For instance, we have normal gut bacteria that live within us without causing problems; however, when those penetrate the bowel wall and enter the bloodstream, ...Read more
Will ESR (Sed rate) and CBC show abnormalities with meningitis or other infection causing brain or heart inflammation?
Not reliable: If you're having symptoms of meningitis or heart disease (palpitations, chest pain, shortness of breath), the sed rate is utterly worthless as a way of ruling out disease and even a normal CBC proves nothing. I'm a lab physician and want to reassure you -- the key question is not "What's my ESR? " but "How do I FEEL? " ...Read more
Is the pain from an ear infection from your eardrum bursting? Why is ur balance so bad when you get one? What is the fluid that comes out of ur ear?
Ear infection: The eardrum itself is very innervated. In other words the ear drum is very sensitive. When the ear drum bursts it is usually from a suppurative otitis media. White blood cells (pus) are brought into the area to fight the infection (bacteria, or virus). The ear drum bulges and then will break- perforate. The bulging and perforation are painful but once it perforated the pain usually improves. ...Read more
Yes but...: Any ear infection can theoretically spread to the brain and result in meningitis or brain abscess and with a worst case scenario result in death. But, this is really unusual. In 20+ years of practice I have seen less than a handful of ear infections that have spread to the brain and none of those patients died. ...Read more
I heard that when you have an ear infection the eardrum can burst. Is it true or common to happen?
Rare but can happen: It is rare but it can happen. Sometimes with an ear infection the pus inside the middle ear causes the drum to thin in certain places. The pressure can become so great that the drum bursts. Before antibiotics this bursting was actually a good thing because the pus would drain and the ear improve. ...Read more
My gf has impacted wax. She also believes that water in her ear will cause the eardrum to burst. She had many ear infections and tubes as a child?
Common problem: Impacted wax can be dissolved by drops available over the counter at most supermarkets or pharmacies. W hen these are too slow, the wax can be removed under direct vision by an ENT. I have also cleaned this out using a water pic, and this does not "rupture" the drum. She can either get this fixed or deal with the poor hearing. Her choice. ...Read more
Had meningitis from bad sinus infection. Cured, but does it mean I'll always immediately get it again if I get another sinus infection?
Think I may have a sinus infection and if I do then I've had it for a while now, how rare is it to get meningitis from this? I'm so scared
Rare: The germs that cause meningitis can use the nasal membranes as an entry point. The aggressive germ will usually do this rapidly (within hours), not after sitting around & triggering a sinus infection. If you had a previous brain injury & were leaking spinal fluid into your nose this would be a expected complication. Your ability to slow down the germ & have it linger in your sinuses makes it unlikely ...Read more
Can u get sinus infection in 1 day? Just exposed to sick kids. Next day stuffy and felt like a cold. Scared cuz I had meningitis from sinuses before.
I have viral meningitis and I wanted to start trying to get pregnant this month...Should I wait until my infection is gone? If yes. How will I know so?
Had meningitis last year caused by sinuses, treated/cured. I believe now have sinus infection but couldn't get appt for 5 days away. Too long to wait?
Maybe: If the infecting agent is aggressive and the host (you) is vulnerable, the ear infection could spread to the meninges. This is usually through hematogenous spread (through the blood stream) rather than through neighboring invasion. Rarely, if the infection is ignored, it can spread to the mastoid air sacs, thence to the venous sinuses in the brain, and thus cerebritis. ...Read more
Have a double ear infection. Dr prescribed ceftin (cefuroxime) for treatment start today. Will I get meningitis from this ear infection if I hadn't have treated it?
Unlikely....: ...But possible. It is more likely, if the infection spreads beyond your ear, that it will go into the mastoid bone located right behind your ear. Even this, though, won't happen most of the time. Ear infections are treated to reduce pain and protect hearing. ...Read more

With prev. Question: is it meningitis? I had symptoms of it for three days before the sinus infection symptoms kicked in. Bulging disc a risk factor?
No less serious:
There are some other infections or forms of infections that can show similar signs and symptoms as meningitis, but I would not describe any of them as less serious, in fact they are more serious.
Some of them are encephalitis, leptospirosis,
subdural empyema (collection of pus between the brainsurface and the inner lining of the skull) and brain abscess. ...Read more

Wouldn't plan on it: Yeast meningitis is generally a problem for the severely compromised patients who end up in an ICU & have very poor or no immune system function. We have yeast in our digestive tract at all times & it gets on our skin & membranes constantly. The immune system and intact skin/membranes keep it out of the blood which is where it must go to get to the meninges. I wouldn't worry about a rash doing it ...Read more
