Is there a way to help the follicle sac release the egg? I have reoccuring cysts and I am ttc. Have been on diff meds and being told to get on bc?

Meds: If you're ttc, it might help to see an infertility specialist. There are drugs that can help to trigger release of a follicle, but typically only infertility doctors prescribe this. I'm not sure why you're being told to go on birth control, maybe pcos? Consider making an appointment with your gynecologist so you can understand what her/his thinking is. ...Read more

I was diagnosed with pcos yrs ago & put on bc. Stopped takin it 2 months ago and my last 2 periods have been 9 and 10 days. Did my cysts get bigger?

Excess Estrogen: Pcos is a misnomer of a diagnosis. The real culprit behind the symptoms of pcos is excess estrogen. Excess estrogen causing heavier longer periods, excess estrogen converting to testosterone and causing excess hair, and excess estrogen contributing to Insulin resistance. The # of follicles/cysts you have has really nothing to do with diagnosis. Birth control helps women prevent uterine cancer. ...Read more

Today's US showed a complex cyst on right ovary went away after a month. Cyst in other ovary decreased 1cm. Dr Put me on BC for 3 months. Is this good?

Yes, good: It's good that your cysts seem to be healing on their own without any invasive treatment. The BCPs are just giving your ovaries a break and helping to prevent any new cyst formation. They are not directly treating the cysts that you have. Your body is taking care of them. ...Read more

Discuss other option: I would recommend discussing other treatment options to suppress ovulation and ovarian cyst formation beyond oral contraceptions (OCPs), though it is likely that the OCPs did not have an opportunity to work yet. ...Read more

Usually resolve: It is normal for a small cyst to develop on the ovaries from time to time. Ovarian cysts are quite common in women during their reproductive years and may be a single cyst or many cysts. Most cysts are benign and only require monitoring. I'm 28, for 2 months my period has changed to 3 days from its norm 6 days. Not on bc, I have cysts & a fibroid, should I be worried about infertility?

Short periods: There is nothing wrong with having short light periods. This is likely a nice change for you from your normal 6 day pattern. We can not draw any conclusions about your fertility based on this information. There is not a link between short periods and infertility. 2 months of cycle variation should simply be monitored as this trend may not continue ...Read more

17 yrs old. Painful ovarian cysts every month even on bc pills. Hot flashes and night sweats every day. Tried other bc pills too. Advice?

Go see your doctor: You didn't mention how you're taking your birth control pills or which brand you're taking but presumably you're having monthly periods. So ask your doctor about skipping placebo pills and immediately starting next month's pills in order to prevent menses. Some brands are sold w/o sugar pills. Or you may need higher dose to prevent ovulation. Bottom line, talk to your doctor. ...Read more

Dr put me on bc for ovarian cysts. I also have mirena (levonorgestrel) but at checkup dr will see if cysts are better. Is being on bc + mirena (levonorgestrel) high risk for breast ca?

Not risky but: It is not risky to be birth control pill while the on Mirena (levonorgestrel) iud but it is not likely to help anything. 23 yof with hot flashes, osteopenia, thinning hair and now ovarian cyst... Thyroid is fine... Any ideas? Not on bc

Several issues: There are several areas that should be explored with your doctor. First, get evaluated for a hormonal imbalance. With thinning hair and an ovarian cyst, the diagnosis of pcos is possible. The osteopenia is concerning because of your age but can be caused by some sort of nutritional deficiency, such as vitamin d deficiency or celiac disease (causing difficulty with absorption of vitamins). ...Read more

If you never smoke, but have before sporadically, and finally get on bc, is it deathly to smoke one cigarette?

Not immediately: Perhaps it might not be immediately deathly to smoke one cigarette, but why even start? Smoking increases the likelihood of blood clots when you're on birth control pills. It only takes one big clot in the lungs, and you're done. And for some people, smoking cigarettes is like eating lay's potato chips: "you can't eat [or smoke] just one.". ...Read more

Had a period in feb a. Week later had another one still in feb it started the 26 and ended the 1st of March will I get another one in March im on BC?

Yes, if...: If a woman is in the middle of her pack (in the active pills), she should get a "period" of withdrawal bleeding when she gets onto the inactive placebo pills. That happens because when her body stops receiving the active pills' hormones, the drop in hormone levels will cause the lining of her uterus to shed and thus appear as vaginal bleeding. ...Read more

Was on depo for 9 mo then switched over to BC for a few mo. Then stopped BC and didn't get period for 5 mo, so I got back on BC. Concerned??

No: No, your body has been bombarded with some hard core exogenous hormones (hormones from outside the body) in addition to the ones made in your body, so this has likely suppressed your ovaries in making your own hormones, thus the no period once you got off the Depo and the BC (your body was used to the ones from the outside). Your body needs time to readjust before having a normal period again. ...Read more
