Abreva: Abreva is available over the counter and is effective if you catch the cold sore at the very beginning of the outbreak. If it is more progressed you may want to see your doctor or urgent care for oral medications. It is possible to transmit it to another person by kissing them when the cold sore is active.

Am I immune to fever blisters? I've 29 and have never had a fever blister in my life. My whole family gets them, and my wife gets them frequently, and I even kiss her when she has them (although I try to avoid actually touching the blisters). I find it

Depends: It depends if you ever had chicken pox before. You may want to be tested with a blood test to see if you had chicken pox in the past. If you did not, then please get vaccinated for chicken pox so that you will never get that illness (which can be a difficult illness in adults). You will not get cold sores or shingles f you never had chicken pox as a child.

If my mother has a fever blister, should I ask her not to kiss my 4 month old?

If my mother has a fever blister, should I ask her not to kiss my 4 month old?

Yes: The fever blister is caused by herpes simplex type 1 and it ca be infectious. It would be prudent to avoid kissing while there is an active fever blister. Remind your mom that there are many ways to show love and the blister should heal fairly quickly. Best wishes.

Don't worry: Worrying will not make any difference. If she has gotten the virus then it's to late to worry about it now. Stress and worrying will only weakens your immune system and that's what the virus is waiting for. Be happy and stop kissing people who have visible cold sores. A little parying my help as well.

My boyfriend has just been diagnosed with glandular fever? How likely is it that I am going to get it? We have been kissing for the last 4 months

My boyfriend has just been diagnosed with glandular fever? How likely is it that I am going to get it? We have been kissing for the last 4 months

Hard to say: Many get this virus in childhood & will be immune. You have been exposed but may be immune & would never get it again. If he became contagious recently it can take a month or more for you to become symptomatic. I would not spend much time worrying since you cannot change what will happen either way.

On the weekend, I kissed this girl who got sick days later. She got glandular fever, but was given it by someone a few weeks earlier. Will I get it?

On the weekend, I kissed this girl who got sick days later. She got glandular fever, but was given it by someone a few weeks earlier. Will I get it?

Not necessarily: Sounds like the girl may have had a viral illness. Whether you get it or not depends on many factors, including your immune system, whether you have been exposed to that particular virus before, your body's stress level, and numerous other variables. The usual incubation period for such an illness is 7-10 days, so you should know in a week or so. Hope this helps!

If my child has a fever blister inside her lip and kisses her grandma that is hep a, b, c positive could my child get infected?

If my child has a fever blister inside her lip and kisses her grandma that is hep a, b, c positive could my child get infected?

See below: If active hep a, yes infection could occur as the virus is transmitted by oral/ fecal route. As for hep b and c, they are blood borne/sexually transmitted primarily and thus it would be less likely to transmit from grandma. However, for safety, wait until the blister is gone in your child before direct kisses.

My boyfriend is not feeling well, sneezing, congested nose, mucus in throat, h/a, fever and chills. If I kiss him and be around him will I get sick?

My boyfriend is not feeling well, sneezing, congested nose, mucus in throat, h/a, fever and chills. If I kiss him and be around him will I get sick?

Virus vs. Allergy: If he has a virus, you are at risk for developing the same illness if exposed. It sounds likely to be a virus due to the fever and chills, which do not occur with allergy.

Tincture of time: Lesions run their course over about 5 days or so. Early treatment with antivirals can shorten the course. Some docs use laser therapy which may also shorten the course.

Why do I get a fever blister on the same spot twice a year?

Why do I get a fever blister on the same spot twice a year?

Herpes: This sounds like Herpes. Herpes is a virus that your body never fully expels--once you have it, you have it for life and it can come back just as you describe. You can treat outbreaks with topical or oral antiviral medicine--consult with your doctor for a prescription and to confirm the diagnosis.
