You : You need to discuss the results of your pap smear with your doctor again so you better understand what was found. Sometimes a test is done with the pap smear to determine if the cerix is infected with a strain of hpv that would put you at a higher risk for cancer and sometimes a special examination of the cervix called a colposcopy is needed to double check the area. Thankfully, many, many women who have abnormal cells will not develop cancer. ...Read more
No: Abnormal pap smears are caused by hpv or human papillomavirus. Hpv is very common and nearly 80% of us will acquire a strain of it in our lifetimes. I just had a pap and IUD removal. The doctor said my pap was abnormal. Is this because of my mirena (levonorgestrel)?
Not necessarily: While IUD may induce some inflammation and affect the PAP result, the nature of the abnormality is not known from your message. Was the PAP tested for HPV? If not you may wish to find that out. Depending on the severity of the abnormality you may be just followed, referred for colposcopy or treated for inflammation, depending on the results. ...Read more
Why is it necessary for me to have a normal pap smear result in order to get the mirena (levonorgestrel) IUD ?
Not sure: I am not sure who told you that you should have normal pap smear for Mirena (levonorgestrel) iud. The only reason would be that if you do have abnormal pap smear and undergo further work up and treatment, the iud may just interfere with that, but other than that, abnormal pap smear is not a contraindication. ...Read more
Blood work, pap all done nothing has came up.? Irregular heavy periods dr wants to put in an iud? Any other options? Can't take bc pills.Hbp.
How common is it for a 17 year old to get cervical cancer with genital warts and an iud? I have had the IUD for 4 years now. And, i just got rid of my genital warts. But, I do not get regular pap tests.
The : The fact that you have genital warts means you have been exposed to the hpv virus, there are 100's of types of hpv, some causing warts, and other types causing cervical cancer. The only way to tell if you have cervical changes from hpv is to have a pap smear. However, new guidelines from the american college of gynecologists (acog) recommend pap smears not be done until age 21. Acog states, " although the rate of hpv infection is high among sexually active adolescents, invasive cervical cancer is very rare in women under age 21. The immune system clears the hpv infection within one to two years among most adolescent women. Because the adolescent cervix is immature, there is a higher incidence of hpv-related precancerous lesions (called dysplasia). However, the large majority of cervical dysplasias in adolescents resolve on their own without treatment" you should still visit your doctor for their input, and other testing, mainly std when indicated. Even though you have an iud, you still need to protect yourself against std's, this can be done by using condoms with any sexual encounter, including oral, anal, and genital. Good luck. ...Read more
