I'm a 61yr old meat & potato man. I don't drink or smoke. My LDL is 90, HDL is 46, TRIGLYCERIDES 41. Should I still have my carotid artery checked?

Not in most cases: Unless there is a good reason to check, it is not cost effective. Some reasons to check include the presence of a bruit (an audible noise by stethescope) or symptoms (stroke or mini-stroke). ...Read more

I'm wondering if I do not eat fatty food, why is my triglycerides level high?

I'm wondering if I do not eat fatty food, why is my triglycerides level high?

Weight and genes: Fasting triglyceride levels are predominantly determined by liver synthesis and how fast they are cleared from the blood. They are less affected by the amount of fat that is eaten. Liver triglyceride production increases with the usual western carbohydrate-rich diet. But the most important factors are genes and presence of obesity. If obese, weight loss can have dramatic tg lowering effects. ...Read more

Is shellfish is okey to eat for a high triglyceride patient?

Is shellfish is okey to eat for a high triglyceride patient?

Suspect the cooking: Shellfish do contain cholesterol, but if prepared in a heart-healthy way, avoiding deep frying and saturated fats/butter etc probably will not significantly raise tg's. They do contain omega 3, however again in small amounts. (particularly crab). To better understand this complex issue, speak to a registered dietitian (rd) with an interest in lipid disorders. www.learnyourlipids.com. ...Read more

Is it safe to eat raw sweet potatoes? Were supposed to serve them to kids for lunch at school.

Is it safe to eat raw sweet potatoes? Were supposed to serve them to kids for lunch at school.

Safe? Yes. But Raw?: Raw? That is bizarre. Excuse my frankness. What possible value would that have to a school lunch? Raw is not unhealthy, but it seems extremely unappetizing. ...Read more

What are the best foods to eat to lower high cholesterol and triglycerides?

Cholesterol & trigs: You should eat lots of plant-based foods, such as fruits, nonstarchy vegetables, legumes, nuts, and whole grains rich in soluble fiber and monounsaturated fat while limiting foods with high glycemic carbs, cholesterol, saturated and trans fat. Fatty fish rich in omega-3 fatty acid such as salmon can help lower triglycerides. Moderate alcohol may help raise HDL but can also elevate triglycerides. ...Read more

Is it more nutritional to eat a regular baked potato or a baked sweet potato?

Is it more nutritional to eat a regular baked potato or a baked sweet potato?

Food Questions: I do not know what you mean by nutritious. They are both carbohydrate calories (100%). The sweet potato is a complex carbohydrate, meaning this is better for overall diet and correct calories. The regular baked potato is just simple carbs. It is just simply sugar when it is digested. ...Read more

Do I need to limit natural carbs like sweet potatoes on a plant based diet??? Or can I eat as much as I want?

Do I need to limit natural carbs like sweet potatoes on a plant based diet??? Or can I eat as much as I want?

Limit simple carbs: A plant-based diet is very healthy but I would limit processed simple carbs like white flour and white rice, as they tend to raise blood sugar. White potatoes and high-glycemic fruits like dates should also be limited but all of these are OK in moderation. Sweet potatoes actually raise blood sugar less than white potatoes! I was diagnosed with a white potato allergy and was wondering if I have to avoid all potatoes or can I eat sweet potatoes?

Ok that I cut out sweet potatoes and bread or was I wrong doing so? I'm tryin to lose weight, usually eat vegs, white meat, beans, 1 egg a day.

Ok that I cut out sweet potatoes and bread or was I wrong doing so? I'm tryin to lose weight, usually eat vegs, white meat, beans, 1 egg a day.

Wise to reduce bread: Most experts would agree that avoiding bread helps people to lose weight- it is wise to minimize starches, esp. Those that raise blood sugar as much as bread does. However, sweet potatoes have many useful nutrients and don't raise blood sugar nearly as much as bread or white potatoes, so I see no need to cut them out- see http://www.Whfoods. Com/genpage. Php? Can you get too much vitamin A or C by just diet alone? I eat one or 2 oranges and a few cups of carrots and sweet potatoes daily in my diet

Can you get too much vitamin A or C by just diet alone? I eat one or 2 oranges and a few cups of carrots and sweet potatoes daily in my diet

NO: Nothing harmful with these foods in these amounts. Overdose of vitamins happens only from supplements, not foods. Large amounts of carotenes in certain foods can make your skin orange colored, but that is all. Preformed vitamin A in supplements, which does not occur in food, can be toxic in large doses. Overdose of supplemental vitamin A causes birth defects, dry skin, headaches, and other things. ...Read more

Been having excess mucus after I eat almost anything. Is it an allergy to the food? Had it tonight with sweet potato. Or could it be bc of GERD?

Hard to know: Secretions from the nasal mucosa that increase after a meal is usually due to firing of nerves related to food digestion, but that have side effects in the nose. Its called gustatory rhinitis and is treatable with nasal medication if severe or bothersome. Acid reflux can certainly worsen rhinitis, but usually not immediately unless there is also heartburn/metalic taste. Not food allergy. ...Read more
