Not advised: Drinking on an ssri antidepressant can make depression or anxiety persist ("fighting" the treatment). It increases seizure risk. Can make alcohol feel stronger, impairing driving and similar activities more than expected. The standard rule: avoid all alcohol. That said, people use ssris for months or years; some use alcohol occasionally in small amts and are ok. Weigh the risks. ...Read moreSee 1 more doctor answer
Alcohol is available in many beverages, from beer and wine to the more potent distilled spirits, such as gin, rye, and whiskey. There appear to be at least small health benefits of small amounts of alcohol use (fewer than five drinks per week), especially of red wine Excessive alcohol use can lead to addiction and severe social and physical complications. Excess long term alcohol use is the most common cause of cirrhosis of the ...Read more
Going to be starting Lexapro (escitalopram) & noticed it says do not drink alcohol but i know 5 people on it that still drink alcohol with no bad side effects.
Mixing is dangerous: Lexapro combined with alcohol can suppress the respiratory center in the brain. The person will stop breathing and this will cause death. There is no scientifice data showing at what quantities of alcohol and at what dossage of Lexapro can cause this depression of respiratory center . The dose that can kill the people varies from person to person. Xanax (alprazolam) + alcohol can kill the person much faster. ...Read more

Took one 5mg Lexapro (escitalopram) on Monday night and then decided not to take again. Is it safe to drink alcohol tonight approx 96 hours later? No other meds.
Don't stop like that: It strikes me that drinking is less of a concern related to your medicine than it is regarding your anxiety. Alcohol can be tricky to predict if you are not feeling well emotionally, so I would consider that. Since you were only taking your Lexapro (escitalopram) for one day, you probably did not have a bad reaction. But for the future, stopping antidepressants suddenly can make you feel terrible. Be careful ...Read moreSee 1 more doctor answer
Is it ok to drink alcohol on 1 mg risperidol and 10 mg lexapro (escitalopram)? I won't be driving.
Can you drink alcohol while on 5mg of Lexapro (escitalopram)? i'm not taking it for depression, just to chill out a little from stress
I just started Lexapro (escitalopram) and Ativan and neither label said anything about alcohol consumption, would drinking be safe?
How much?: The effects of alcohol mixed with meds are usually additive. Depending on the individual's biodhemistry drinking might be safe - but you would need to be careful about quantity. Think about dirnking - but less. If you or family members have drinking problems, then drinking at all is a gamble. ...Read more
I am on 20 mg of Lexapro (escitalopram) and I find that when I drink alcohol I get drunk really fast. I also get sick. I had 5 drinks last night and threw up a lot.
Is safe to drink alcohol in moderation while being on concerta, lexapro, and fludrocortisone hi I am a 21 year old woman who has been diagnosed with dysautonomia. I have been feeling back to normal and i was wondering if it is safe to drink alcohol in mod
Probably: None of the medications you mention react especially badly to alcohol, although you may find that "moderation" is less that it would be if you did not have dysautonomia and were not taking these medications. Definitely check with your doctor(s) first, though, about what to look for. Also, start really, really low and see what your tolerance to alcohol is. ...Read moreSee 1 more doctor answer
Outstanding question: There is at least one sub-type of alcoholism.(and likely addiction in general) where alcohol use has been documented to increase with ssris (and other anti depressants?) patients are younger onset and with strong family histories of alcohol use. These are not perfect criteria however. The meds cause increased irritability and impulsiveness. Few doctors are aware of these studies. ...Read more

Turning 21 this weekend! On Lexapro (escitalopram), (escitalopram) can I have any alcohol at all? Will having one drink severely affect me? I take Lexapro (escitalopram) for anxiety and migraine.
Likely not but...: Not an MD, but have had patients with these sorts of questions. In a healthy individual only taking Lexapro, (escitalopram) no history or signs of liver disease, it is extremely unlikely that one alcoholic drink would cause problems for you. That said, for some people it is difficult to stick to just one drink. No matter what for your health and peace of mind ask your prescribing MD for conclusive answer. ...Read more
