The brain and spinal cord communicates with what is occurring in the internal organs and limbs by nerve fibers where are like electrical wires with insulation (myelin) and the "copper" (axon). Within brain and spinal cord these nerves connect to other nerves via synapses on both axons and dendrites. A nerve can carry information regarding sensations, and ...Read more

Is severe nerve root with paralysis of the inner left leg, and big toe paraylis surgicaly repairable. L4 L5 lumbar spine?
Radiculopathy: You don't mention what surgical procedure you've had previously, but an l4-5 entrapment would effect the lower extremity and not the thigh. That level would be l2-3. Assuming you've had the MRI you need of the lumbar spine, I'm surprised you haven't had an implanted stimulator to address the pain. Paralysis of muscle groups can become permanent if the entrapment persists long enough. ...Read more
Power w/c ran over foot. Severe pain in medial foot (increases with weight bearing), tender to touch, x-ray showed no breaks. What should I do now?
GetBackOnYourChair..: Break or no break, keep off it for a few days (rent some crutches) 'till you can start to walk and if you can't after, say, a week or ten days, get a re-check and they may repeat the x-ray to see if something shows up that didn't on the first one. Elevate it as much as possible to keep the swelling down (swelling slows healing) and if it helps, apply ice to it, even a few days later it may help. ...Read more
I suffer from degenerative disc disease and recently experienced a severe episode when a nerve was trapped for a few days. The nerve was released but numbness in my lower calf and foot continued but has gradually improved. Is treatment required?

I severely broke my talus bone, tore all the legimates in my foot, and suffer from nerve damage from an accident 5 months ago. Shoe recommendations??
A shoe by any name..: It really depends on what your basic needs are. Style, comfort and function are all options. Perhaps you can find a crossover shoe to meet two needs. At any rate, once you decide on which route you want to follow, the choice of shoe will be easier, albeit not easy. ...Read more
I have severe numbness on top of my left foot and numbness on the side of my left leg. My MRI says disc bulge abuts the defending nerve roots.
Response: Not sure of your question, but you describe numbness anatomically in a left L-5 distribution, and might expect your MRI to demonstrate compression of left L-5 nerve root. Alternative anatomy might be c/w peroneal compression at lateral knee. An EMG can sort out these questions, and assess severity of nerve compression to guide treatment decisions. ...Read more
SOME THOTS: Not uncommon to develop a painful peripheral neuropathy with type 2 diabetes, and this symptomatology is caused by small fibre involvement. The elevated sed rate is likely due to the diabetes. Your metformin could interfere with b-12 absorption, and this needs checking. Fibula break with ligament tear. Pain with severe swelling and bruising. Now ankle and top off foot numb. Is this from swelling?
Fibula break with li: Yes, the nerves are compressed because of the swelling and the foot can become numb. Get off your foot, elevate it, use crutches so that there is no weight on this foot asap and get treated either with a soft cast for a few days than a hard cast or surgery, let your orthopedist decide depending on the x-rays either way you should not put any weight on this limb or you can dislocate the fracture. ...Read more
