Why are they saying Yaz (drospirenone and ethinyl estradiol) birth control pills cause more blood clots?

Why are they saying Yaz (drospirenone and ethinyl estradiol) birth control pills cause more blood clots?

A small risk: Birth control pills contain an estrogen, which is almost universally the same regardless of brand, and a progestagen which varies with the brand. Different progetagens have different risks of causing blood clots, apparenly higher in the case of the progestagen in yaz (drospirenone and ethinyl estradiol). The risks and absolute differences are very small. Consider the difference between 1 in 10, 000 and 2 in 10, 000 for example. ...Read more

Birth Control Pills (Definition)

Also known as oral contraceptives, birth control pills are highly effective oral medications that use hormones to prevent pregnancy. There are two main types of birth control pills: one with estrogen and progestin (also known as the combination pill) and one with just progestin. The two main ways they prevent pregnancy are: 1) The hormones thicken the cervical mucous, which keeps sperm from entering the uterus on their way to the egg; and 2) By maintaining a level of hormone in the blood stream that prevents the ...Read more

Not likely: This sounds as if you're uncomfortable, and you should discuss this with your primary doctor, but not likely due to yaz (drospirenone and ethinyl estradiol). Nausea may be present in first 1-3 months of yaz (drospirenone and ethinyl estradiol). Try taking in the evening, but if it is occurring the first few months, it's likely to get better. Discuss benefits/risks of Yaz (drospirenone and ethinyl estradiol) with your doctor. ...Read more

Extended : Extended cycle contraception is effective for "scheduling" your menstrual period. Some women can tolerate long periods of continuous hormones others break through with spotting or bleeding. When this happens you may want to take 5-7 days off (use back up contraception) and then start a new pack. ...Read more

I am 22 & on birth control pills (yaz) and have been for over a year. I have brown discharge mostly when I wipe. Is this normal? What should I do?

Common: This type of bleeding/discharge is common on the pill. The pill is still effective and this is more of a nuisance than a problem. The two options are to stay on this pill and see if it resolves or change pills. ...Read more

I have varicose venis on my leg. Can i take birth control pills "yaz"?

I have varicose venis on my leg. Can i take birth control pills "yaz"?

Birth control & vein: There are many risk factors for developing blood clots & the more risk factors that you have the higher the chance that you could develop a blood clot. Both hormonal birth control & varicose veins increase your risk for blood clots, so adding the 2 risks is worse than 1 risk alone. Best option is treating the varicose veins so that this risk no longer exists, making birth control less of an issue ...Read more

Is it true that certain birth control pills (ocella/yaz/yasmin) may be leading to gallbladder issues?

Is it true that certain birth control pills (ocella/yaz/yasmin) may be leading to gallbladder issues?

Controversial: Women have twice the risk for gallstones compared to men. Both estrogen and Progesterone increase the risk of gallstones. Several studies have reached conflicting conclusions, one canadian study that suggested a 20% increased risk in contrast to an english study where the risk was 10% lower compared to women not taking bcp. This suggests that if there is a risk, it is not clinically significant. ...Read more
