Can Xanax Cause Tremors
I have tremors in my stomach upon entering REM sleep. I have PTSD and was taken off Xanax (alprazolam) in 2 weeks by a VA intern 2 years ago. Need cause/solution!
PAWS: Post-acute withdrawal syndrome. In people who have been on benzodiazepines for long periods of time, tapering should be accomplished over months, not weeks. This intern was under the supervision of an attending physician, and you should make contact with that physician (or your PCP in the VA). A small increase in the clonazepam (am sure it is 0.5 NOT 0.05) may help and then can be tapered. ...Read more

Was taking 1.5 mg of Xanax (alprazolam) daily as needed for panic for 5 weeks. When I don't take it for more than a day I have tremors. Could I have a mild addict?
Yes, but it's good: You've had a relatively short duration of use, so it will be easier for you to taper off use and get past the w/drawal effects. I've heard a very safe pattern is to step down 0.25mg in dose every 2 weeks till gone. So, 1.25mg/day then 1mg, then 0.75mg, then 0.5, to 0.25 and FREE! 2-1/2 months to a safe landing. Or, better yet - ask a provider to guide you off safely. Be careful w/ Rx's. Best 2U! ...Read more

My mom was switched from Xanax (alprazolam) to phenobarbital yesterday and now she is has whole body shakes heart is racing and cold. Is this normal withdrawal symptoms or take to hospital now? Very concerned
Withdrawal: Your mom is given phenobarb to prevent seizure, but she is having withdrawal, and the dose of phenobarb is dependent on level to work and whether it really works for her. It is best to take her to urgent care or er to be looked at before she has a seizure. I don't know how old she is and withdrawal can be devastating. A stepwise process may help better but up to the md, but she seems to need help. ...Read more

Celexa & Xanax (alprazolam): The Food & Drug Administration recommends a max dose of 40mg of celexa (citalopram) per day. I have been taking Xanax (alprazolam) 0.5mg at bedtime only for 10 years. Could this cause insomnia? How can I stop taking this?
It's possible that you have developed tolerence to xanax (alprazolam) 0.5 mg because you have been taking it for so long.
You can reduce the dose to three quarters of the tab for one week, then half a tab for one week and stop and see what happens. Ofcourse, it's always better to consult with the doctor who is prescribing your medication. ...Read more
I have taken 1 .25mg pill of xanax (alprazolam) daily for almost a year for anxiety. Would stopping suddenly cause major withdrawal?
It's a low dose: but taking it for a year suggests you are probably saturated, and at risk for withdrawal sx's if you suddenly stop. Run this by your MD before stopping. The MD probably will suggest thinning your dose by going to every other day or even cutting this small dose in half and then thinning. Withdrawing suddenly might cause anxiety, sleeplessness, poor concentration, irritability and??? ...Read more

What causes someone to be interested in things again when couple weeks prior after taking Xanax (alprazolam) before lacked any signs of interest?
Certain situations cause me social anxiety, I've used Xanax (alprazolam) it works but wears off too quickly. I don't need a daily just sometimes. Advice?
Xanax (alprazolam) is dangerous:
I agree this can be treated without medication. CBT is an established treatment.
If you have reasons not to do the work/face the fears involved in overcoming this anxiety (which includes experiencing the satisfaction and pride of having done something despite its difficulty), then medication makes sense.
however, NOT Xanax! Very addictive. Awful withdrawal. A-D's work better, less danger. ...Read more

How much time it usually takes to Xanax (alprazolam) to cause 'permanent' cognitive deficits like memory deficits?
Not permanent: Any benzodiazepine can induce tolerance with ~2-3 weeks of consistent use. One might also have some temporary memory dysfunction with the first dose -- inability to learn new material when using. When the dose wears off, this effect should also wear off. If on xanax (alprazolam) and having this problem, a very gradual taper should allow cognition to return to previous abilities. It's not permanent. ...Read more
