Can working your abs help you not avoid inguinal hernias?

Can working your abs help you not avoid inguinal hernias?

Can strengthening your abs at the gym help you not get inguinal hernias?

No.: Inguinal hernias occur at natural weak points of the abdominal wall. We believe that chronic "wear-and-tear" can lead to a hole forming in the muscle in susceptible people, which manifests itself as a hernia. Therefore, what you think may be helping you can actually increase the risk of a hernia developing. In contrast, obesity is a risk factor, as well, so your best bet is aerobic exercise. Read more

I had an inguinal hernia repair surgery last year, what exercises can I do to tone my obliques and abs?

1SizeDOESNOT Fit All: The goal of any operation is to get people back to their baseline activity (and most people can!).However, activity restrictions may vary quite a bit from patient-to-patient, depending on the size and type of hernia, the nature of the repair, and the patient's health. Contraction in my abdomen whenever I laugh or cough or tighten abs. 2 inches left from my navel, can be felt, no lump of pain. Could I have a hernia?

Yes: You can have a hernia even if you don't see a lump. A hernia is a small defect in your fascia that allows fat or intestines to slip through. When you cough or use your abdominal muscles it can pull on this defect causing pain. Very small hernias can be only 1cm in size and still cause symptoms. Read more
