Can Use Of Cotton Swabs To Clean Our Ears Lead To Problems
I've seen opposing views on the usefulness of cotton swabs. Should adult not use cotton swabs to clean their ears?
Swabs vs ears: Funny, I have not seen any opposing views (although i hadn't looked until just now). I'm not aware of anyone recommending use of cotton (or other material) swabs to clean ear canal (although they fit perfectly!). In fact, don't stick anything inside ear. Use swabs only to clean outside of ear. Check out http://goaskalice.Columbia.Edu/why-exactly-shouldnt-i-stick-cotton-swabs-my-ears. ...Read more
In moderation: As the saying goes, "everything in moderation." Gently using Q-tips is ok, but if bleeding or irritation happens in the nose, that may mean one has surpassed the "everything in moderation" guideline. ...Read more
Can using cotton swabs or other objects cause damage to inner hair cells and affect hearing? Just curious . Thanks..
Not inner hair cells: Using cotton swabs will not damage the hair cells in the inner ear, unless a severe infection results from their use. If using cotton swabs packs in wax, hearing loss can be affected until it is removed. An infection of the external ear canal can cause decreased hearing, that usually resolves when the infection is treated. Infections are common from their use. Don't use them! ...Read more
How to disinfect touchscreen cellphones and remotes to eliminate bacterias like staph etc? What to use and how to use? Can I wipe them with dettol?
Maybe safe, but: There is no question in my mind about white vinegar being the better choice. I'd dilute it 1:1 with water. It's very successful at stopping itch - even better than hydro-cortisone creams. It will sting less too and stinging skin that is already irritated doesn't sound good. Best! ...Read more

How often should I clean my ears using drops of olive oil at bedtime or hydrogenperoxide? I'm trying to keep them clean without using cotton buds.
Elbow only: For those folks suffer from a continual problem wax buildup, there are some over the counter products that do a terrific job of gently cleaning ear wax from the ear canal. These products are usually referred to "ear wax removal" kits and usually contain some sort of liquid drop and an irrigating bulb syringe. This kits are not recommended for people suffering from an ear infection or have chronic. ...Read more
Nope-be careful: Not at all as long as you use care. Why are you using these anyway. Get you an ear and a nose wash from the drug store. Let them drain and drip dry. Use a hairdryer to dry the ears. Cleaning the ears daily can dry them and cause itchy ears. Poking things in your nose can cause bleeding and that can be a headache. ...Read moreSee 1 more doctor answer
Is it completely safe to clean my ears every 6 month with salt and water mixture, using a cotton ball to drop the blend into my ear to clean the wax?
Ok to use hydrogen peroxide to help soften and remove heavily impacted wax from ears in somewhat remote location?
Yes with a syringe: Hydrogen peroxide with an ear syringe is fine. If the. Wax is really impacted, you will need to see and ENT specialist who has the tools to remove it. If it doesn't come out with the irrigate by syringe DO NOT TRY TO REMOVE IT YOURSELF WITH ANY TOOL. That would be inviting a perforation of an eardrum ...Read more
