Herpes Transmission: Herpes simplex virus (hsv) has two types: type i generally infects the mouth and produces "fever blisters". Type ii more commonly is genital. However, performing or receiving oral sex with someone infected with hsv i or ii can result in infection. There are blood tests that can quickly determine if you've been infected with either strain. Antivirals help to reduce shedding and infection. ...Read more
Herpes: It depends on who is infected and where. If the condom covers the infected skin on the male's penis then no. If the condom is not covering where he is infected then yes. If you have vaginal herpes then his condom would protect him. If your herpes is not in the vagina then a condom would not protect him. ...Read more
Can you spread your own genital herpes by touching genitals with underwear on and then touching face?
Little or no risk: People with longstanding herpes are immune to new infections with the same virus type (HSV1 or HSV2). Therefore, auto-inoculation (self infection of a new body site) almost never happens. For the same reason, couples in which both have herpes do not "ping pong" the infection back and forth. So no worries; this won't happen. ...Read more

If I have genital herpes but have never had symptoms can I spread it while using a condom? Or is it only present in my excretions?
Often: Every time a person with active herpetic genital lesions has sex with someone who has not previously encountered this organism it can be spread. There is also evidence that persons without active lesions who shed the virus in the vaginal secretions can also spread the virus. The virus, once you get it, is with you for life and can be spread every time you have sex with a new partner. ...Read more

Primary infection may result in systemic as well as local manifestations. Incubation period is 3-7 d. ...Read more

Can cold sores be spread to the genital area? Is it possible for someone with cold sores to cause genital herpes in another person?
Yes, it is possible.
Cold sores or fever blisters are caused by herpes simplex virus type 1 (hsv-1) and are extremely common. Most people become infected as an infant or small child when kissed or by sharing eating utensils with an adult who has the virus. 20% of the cases of genital herpes are also caused by hsv-1 thought to be infections from oral-genital contact. The virus is most contagious when someone has a cold sore, but can still be passed along by someone who does not. Many people do not even know that they are infected because the virus can "hide out" in the nerve cells for very long periods of time — for some people it hides out forever and they never get a cold sore. For others, the virus can "wake up" at any time and that's when a cold sore happens. No one knows exactly what causes a cold sore to appear — sometimes stress, illness, fevers, colds, sunlight, cold weather, menstruation, certain foods, allergies, you name it! They usually last 7-10 days and are more of an annoyance than a danger unless you have a weakened immune system or contract a bacterial infection on top of the cold sore.

Direct Contact: Genital herpes is essentially spread by direct contact with an infectious area. It is so common primarily due to its ability to infect another even in the absence of any sores. So, that means that genital herpes can be spread even if you or your partner don't see any sores — orally or genitally. Valtrex (valacyclovir) has been shown to reduce, not eliminate the risk for asymptomatic transmission. ...Read more

Two types of herpes: HSV-1 is the type that usually occurs on the mouth or lips -perhaps you were kissed on your head? which would explain the somewhat unusual presentation of the infection. Genital herpes is HSV-2, a different virus, and is acquired sexually. Although there is some (minimal) cross-protection, the best thing to do is practice safe sex.
