My daughter (16m) got a cut on the crown of her nose. I put a little Neosporin for kids on it. Would it harm her if she got it in her eyes or mouth?
Not harmful: Although the package may say that it is recommended for external use only, the antibiotics present in Neosporin can be prescribed orally and the ointment base is similar to chapped lip products and prescription eye ointments. Do have your daughter evaluated for infection if the area becomes red and swollen. ...Read more
My tooth is broke and it's sharp on site and it has cut my lip on the inside of my mouth and has created a sore now and I have been putting peroxide on it to clean it but it just keeps hurting I'm wondering is it okay to put Neosporin on it?
May be skin allergy!: Neosporin is a common OTC skin antibiotic, but it has a moderate incidence of cutaneous (skin) sensitization/ allergy. Cleanse the cut site with clean water, stop using Neosporin, and use a different skin antibiotic, such as Bacitracin. Avoid use of Neosporin in the future! See your family MD if it doesn’t clear up. ...Read more

My son had a tick bite. I had to carefully remove it. Head and all and put alcohol to clean, neosporin and itch cream will it be ok?
Simple Care: When our protective skin is injured/opened, then the delicate internal environment is exposed to the harsh external environment. Covering it with a clean dressing is the way to go changing it every other day or so. Avoid scratching. Anti-itch creams help. Also, stay away from peroxide, alcohol, betadine, hibiclens, bleach solutions and other irritating things. ...Read more

Get Rx from dentist: Sore corners of your mouth is called angular cheilitis and is a fungal infection caused by candida albicans. Your dentist can prescribe a topical antifungal cream to treat this. My cold sore in the corner of my mouth has scabbed over & is starting to crack and bleed making the healing process take longer. Will neosporin help?
Angular cheilitis?: A sore exactly in the corner of the mouth could be oral herpes (cold sore), but more likely is angular cheilitis, a different problem. It's often due to a superficial yeast infection, and antifungal creams may help. Neosporin probably won't help much. See your doctor and take it from there. Good luck! ...Read more
Over 30 days, cracks corners of mouth, appears white like scar tissue, spreading, small white ulcers, some swelling, been treating with peroxide, abreva, neosporin, chap stix no results
Possibly: You can, especially if there is a wound or crack causing bleeding. However, I don't like neosporin on the face because the neomycin in neosporin has been known o cause a chemical dermatitis. Use polysporin (bacitracin and polymyxin) for this purpose instead. If using it just for chapped lips, just use chapstick or similar... ...Read more

A red-shouldered hawk has a nest in my front yard. Today it swooped by me. Its talons scratched my head. It bled a little. I've cleaned it with alcohol and used neosporin. Is that enough? I had a tetanus short four years ago.
I was fascinated by your question and so I took some time researching it. (i went to the military medical school where we studied things like this). It is probably better that this was a red-shouldered hawk rather than it's close relative the red tailed hawk. I am not an infectious disease specialist. So, you may need input from one (there is one infectious disease doctor that periodically answers question on avvo. Com). The red tailed hawk can carry sarcocystis which would normally only present a danger to humans if eating uncooked fowl. However there were some reports of infection by bite or scratch. Both the red - shouldered hawk and the red tailed hawk can carry west nile virus. The red shoulder hawk can carry toxoplasma gondii, which is normally only transmitted to humans via eating uncooked fowl. The birds feces can also contain the organisms. So, here is my concern, if the tallons are contaminated by feces- would a scratch be a easy vehicle for human infection.
So, the only thing I can tell you, is that your tetanus shot is up to date. You will need to get input from someone with more knowledge than I have, to see if you are at risk for any of the above mentioned infections. ...Read more
