Is inflammation of the nasal septum lining treated with medication or will saline rinses be the best?

Nasal sprays: Inflammation of the nasal mucosa or lining is best treated with a topical nasal steroid spray like flonase, nasonex, (mometasone) etc. These nasal steroid sprays take some time (months) to work and should be used every day, not just for a week or two. Additionally, nasal saline sprays will help by keeping the nasal lining moist because dryness can cause more inflammation. Think about a humidifier at night. ...Read more

Can a virus or bacteria get into the body through the ears? Or is it only the eyes, mouth, and nose?

Infections: Different viruses & bacteria enter our bodies thru different pathways. In addition to what you've noted, don't forget sexually transmitted diseases eg genitals as another source of entry. To specifically answer your question, yes, bacteria can cause an infection of the outer ear aka swimmer's ear. Best way to avoid infections is to wash your hands. And get your vaccination status updated. ...Read more

Is there any possibility that ingredients of nasal sprays go into the eyes and cause problem? Like when eye drops drain into nose and throat?

Is there any possibility that ingredients of nasal sprays go into the eyes and cause problem? Like when eye drops drain into nose and throat?

Eye/nose connection: Eye drops drain with gravity down the lacrimal ducts into the nose. Ear drops thru Eustachian tubes also drain with gravity into the nose. Nasal drops and aerosols can't work up into the eye (or ear) against gravity like your home plumbing - it's one way. However, a bone defect between nose and orbit (like from fracture or surgery) can cause air or medication from nose into orbit around eye. ...Read more

Yes: Yes, fluids and antibiotics can be given together, though there are some compatibility issues with certain medications. Your physician may choose to put the fluids through one line (maybe the left arm) and the antibiotic through another (maybe the right arm), or may choose to use a Y-connector to allow both to flow through a single IV catheter. ...Read more

Is there a type of insect that enters your sinus area via ears and nose and burrows there? They can sometimes perforate your sinus too.

Is there a type of insect that enters your sinus area via ears and nose and burrows there? They can sometimes perforate your sinus too.

Insect in sinus area: I am sorry to hear that you swallowed a 'stink bug' 4-5 weeks ago and that now you feel as though it is still inside your nose moving around. I have taken many foreign bodies out of ears, noses, and airways, but never a stink bug. I am happy to give you some of my initial thoughts, but ultimately I am going to recommend that you make an appointment with an ENT or Ear Nose Throat physician to get evaluated. They will be able to take more of a history, examine you, and perform a flexible nasolaryngoscopy. This is an in office procedure where they pass a small fiberoptic scope through your nose to evaluate your nasal cavities, nasopharynx, pharynx, hypopharynx, and larynx (voice box). These are all of the cavities from nose to your voice box. If there is a foreign body present (such as a bug), they will be able to see it. I don't want to discredit your thoughts and feelings, but I doubt that there is a bug present in your nose anymore. I don't doubt that there may have been initially, but it is highly unlikely that it would have stayed in there for 4-5 weeks. It is more likely that you had a bug fly in there initially, and it irritated the mucosa (lining within your nose), and then even after the bug is gone, the lining may be continually irritated. Nonetheless the ENT will be able to examine you and tell you for sure if there is any foreign body present. Best of luck. ...Read more
