Can Tight Hamstrings Cause Sciatica
Can tight hamstrings cause sciatica without any involvement of the piriformis muscle? (pain in the upper part of my leg after sitting over 3 hours)
Muscle spasms in lower back with pulling sensation and sciatica type pain in legs, no disks problems but really tight hamstrings could this be the caus?
Causes of sciatica: There are causes for sciatica besides disc problems. Hypertrophied muscle or spasm can push on the sciatic nerve causing pain to radiate down leg. The muscle can be in the lower back or pelvis. Since it appears that there is no serious structural problem, then physical therapy is the best way to get muscles and ligaments to relax and stretch and reduce pressure on sciatic nerve. ...Read more
What would cause tight hamstrings, painful flutes and lower back when bending? Not from a physical activity.
These symptoms sou--:
Nd typical of inactivity for a long time. You need to start moving and do some bending/extending of the back/ /hips/knees. Start slow ; gradually build up the reps/frequency, so to develop muscles ; get them loose (limbered) so when you do these activities, they are not so painful or tight.
Muscle relaxers may also help, but I believe the exercises to stretch ; strengthen will help more.
Good luck. ...Read more

I have mild spondylolistheia in l5-s1. Could this cause pins and needles in legs, tight hamstrings?
Mild: If this is mild, then it wouldn't be suggestive, but it all depends on the definition. Presumably a MD ordered this scan, so you should go over the results in detail with them in order to determine if this is the source of the issue. ...Read more
I am almost 2 years post op 2 level lumbar fusion. Low back pain has improved but still having issues with back muscle tightness/muscle fatigue. Exercise regularly, weights, walking, yoga. Advice?
Everything Right: It sounds like you are doing everything right. Surgery is traumatic to the spine and muscular tissue. There can be irreparable damage as as result. Overall, it sounds like surgery was a success because you have an active lifestyle. I would recommend a short course of physical therapy so they can discuss your goals and deficits you have. You may be doing the wrong exercises. Discuss with doc. ...Read more
Weak: If your hamstrings are tight and restricted it will effect the overall strength and endurance of the muscle. Contracted & restricted muscle and tendon groups are not as efficient with contraction and relaxation which influences the strength of the muscle. It also lends to potential micro trauma and injury secondary to imbalances in the overall biomechanics of the muscle group. ...Read more
What do you think about the technique of dry needling for tight hamstrings? Is it safe and effective? Who is best to see for this?? 5k10/15-my 1st.
Typically safe: Dry needling is a technique typically very safe in the hands of an experienced clinician, often a physical therapist or chiropractor. There are many theories regarding how it can work. Although damage is very rare, some patients do have more pain and soreness for a couple of days after needling. Eccentric exercises: The best solution for tight hamstrings and Achilles are stretching and eccentric exercises. Eccentric exercises load and strengthen muscle as a muscle lengthens versus when it shortens. For the hamstring my favorite is the nordic exercise. For the Achilles my favorite is reverse toe raises (heel drops) on an elevated surface such as a stair or step. ...Read more

I'm 24 m, I had midfoot fracture 2 months back, I had tight elastic cast to my foot fr 5 wks, after that suddenly I got sciatica. Does tight cast caused?
Possibly: Sciatica typically is pain originating in the spine or buttock region and radiating down the leg. Typically if the pain you describe is around the cast in the foot then it could be the cast was too tight and caused a local compression of nerves in the foot. If the pain radiates all the way up the leg, then it could be that altered walking pattern could have aggravated a spine issue. ...Read more
What would you suggest for tight muscles caused by tension...and I also have a herniated disc at L5 S1 and suffer with sciatica. Neck position for sle?
Muscle tension: If you wish to avoid taking muscle relaxants like flexeril or robaxin, (methocarbamol) consider stress management therapy. Wearing a soft cervical collar off and on takes pressure of the neck. For sciatic pain which is chronic, epidural corticosteroid injections and/or surgery may be needed and follow up with a neurosurgeon is advisable. ...Read more
Symptom Vs Cause: Sciatica is the symptom of leg pain caused by a disc herniation or narrowing where the nerve exits the spine. A disc herniation is a outpouching of the disc from its normal place into the spinal canal or on the nerve and can be a source of pain in the back or down the leg. The nerve then goes to the muscle which can then hurt, spasm or feel sore or irritated. ...Read more

I stretch really well and warm up right, but my hamstring feels tight. What could it be? What caused it? How can I overcome it?
Partial tear?: A hamstring muscle or tendon that is partially torn or strained often feels tight. Also, nerve pain from the buttocks or low back can give you a sense of hamstring tightness. I would consider consulting with a sport med physician and/or a physical therapist for a more detailed eval to give you more answers and solutions. ...Read more
Can sciatica cause my whole leg to swell. I am being treated for sciatica for a couple of years now. But I have never had my whole leg swell.
Not typical: Sciatica typically does not cause the whole like to see well. Swelling in the lower leg can happen if there is weakness and the muscles are not pumping blood back to the heart. In your situation, if it is truly the entire leg that is swelling, I would be concerned about a vascular problem and have this evaluated right away. An ultrasound of the leg would be the most prudent first step. ...Read more
My hamstrings are always tight no matter how much I stretch. What is the cause and how do I fix it?
Is it possible for a 2mm disc protrusion with annular tear to cause severe sciatica in entire leg?
Herniation with Tear: The disc is like a jelly filled donut. If the donut is compressed too much the jelly leaks out through a break in the donut's bread. The same is true with a disc, the tear is caused by the compression resulting in a herniation (protrusion) and the jelly (inside portion of the disc) is either leaking out or trying to get out. This can result in chemical inflammation of the nerves causing pain. ...Read more
Small random bruise on my leg. Also get random twinges of pain by the bruise. Didn't do anything to cause it. Can it be sciatica related?
Would sciatica cause tingling and no feeling in one leg very suddenly? Also have a large swelling on the base of my back either side of my spine.
Absolutely: This certainly could be sciatica so you should get it checked out straightaway as you have an excellent health care system that lets you get treated easily. A pinched nerve which provides muscles w/the info to move can cause tingling & numbness as you describe. The swelling should also be evaluated by a spine specialist. Imaging, Meds & PT are likely to be used to help you feel better. Keep us posted. ...Read more
Most of the time I have a pain in the upper part, where leg joins groin, of my hamstring. It feels like a tight, pulling, deep ache. Cause?
You may be right: Your hamstring could be tight and trying to strain. Stop exercise and rest it for a few days with only gentle stretching. Applied heat may help losen it up a bit.Advil (ibuprofen) could help any pain or inflamation. After this, gently resume activity, listen to your body, and if recurs, go in to your Doc to check this out. ...Read more
Tailbone pain left side lump feeling/tightness in back of thigh with occasional pain and lump near hamstring what can be the cause? Had baby12weeksago
When doing hamstring stretches (hamstrings very very tight) and I hold the stretch I get a weird fuzzy pulsating feeling in my feet. What causes this?
Pulsate=circulation: Depending on how you are doing these, keep in mind, there is a large vein and artery behind the knee in the indent under the knee (popliteal fossa) this could be compressing and opening the artery and vein. Pulsations describe the flow of circulation with every heartbeat. The best type of stretches for the hamstrings are passive. If you notice it in the heel, it may be the achilles. ...Read more

Can sciatica cause cramp pain in thigh, butt and leg when standing up or sitting and straighten my back up goes away after few seconds?
Yes: Herniated disks that are cause of sciatica pain typically get worse with sitting, bending at the waist, and definitely worse with bending/twisting and raising a heavy object. Try avoiding these positions/activities initially. Typically most herniated disk pain improves on its own by 3-6 weeks. If still bothering you then I recommend seeing your doctor for further imaging. ...Read more
