See an orthopedist: To determine if you need casting, I would recommend you get examined by an orthopedist. They can only recommend treatment after they get a chance to ask about your symptom, consider an xray, and do a thorough evaluation. ...Read more

I fractured a bone on my thumb and was put in a cast. I have had the cast on for a few weeks now and can move my thumb a little. Is this ok?

Probably: It sounds like you had a thumb spica cast (the cast extends to include your thumb) placed, and now you're wiggling your thumb inside the cast? Presumably you sustained a fracture of the metacarpal, which should be well protected inside the cast, so wiggling the thumb a little is fine. Check with your orthopedist for clarification. ...Read more

The scaphoid is a wrist bone on the thumb side that is notorious for being a difficult bone to heal, while a chip fracture off other bones on the thumb side can be significant only in that they indicate ligament injury (sprain). ...Read more

Varies: Scaphoid fractures are often difficult to fully assess with X-ray. Often a ct scan or MRI is used if someone has persistent pain and X-rays look ok. Sometimes rather than doing a lot of initial studies, we will treat a patient in a splint if they have an exam and X-rays could be consistent with a scaphoid fracture, but then dc their splint if their exam and X-ray normalize. ...Read more
