Can the mirena (levonorgestrel) IUD come out?

Can the mirena (levonorgestrel) IUD come out?

If the strings pulle: The Mirena (levonorgestrel) IUD is one of the BEST forms of birth control available, it lasts 5 years, is ~99.5% effective, and thins the uterine lining so that you get lighter periods. 20% of women will stop having periods after 1 year and that's perfectly healthy. I've smoked weed daily for years. I just got a Mirena IUD in today - will the weed effect it at all?

Mirena effective: One of the benefits of the Mirena IUD, is that is acts locally within the uterus. Because of this, meds will not decrease it's effectiveness, even weed.

I have a migrated mirena IUD that has been in for 5 years and 8months and hasn't been removed yet could it get infected?

Mirena?: If it has migrated then it has to be removed for sure, regardless of how long it's been there. If it has been in the uterus for 5 years and it was a Mirena then it would be time to remove it.

I have the mirena iud I have not bled in 6months but now I am bleeding with alot of stringy pieces I also am getting excruciating sharp pains normal?

This is not normal: And should be evaluated. There are a number of potential issues and without an examination these can not be differentiated. Make an appointment with your GYN health care provider ASAP or go to an ER if the pain and bleeding continues.

Considering getting a Mirena IUD. How long does the insertion take? How much pain can I expect to have with the insertion and in the days that follow? I haven't had any children.

Considering getting a Mirena IUD. How long does the insertion take? How much pain can I expect to have with the insertion and in the days that follow? I haven't had any children.

Good choice: Mirena will give you consistent contraception for 5 years. Since you have not had any children, insertion may be somewhat difficult but not impossible. Your provider will be able to offer advice/suggestions on how to minimize the discomfort. Under optimum circumstances, insertion takes about 1-3 minutes or so, the discomfort, subsides quickly, in a day or so. I hope this helps. Best Wishes

Can u get pregnant while you have the mirena (iud)?

Yes but rare: Mirena (levonorgestrel) iud failures are possible but not very common. If you think you are pregnant check a pregnancy test. If it's positive it's very important that you see your doctor immediately. The risk of tubal pregnancy under these rare circumstances is 25%.

What helps on conceiving a child after a mirena IUD?

What helps on conceiving a child after a mirena IUD?

If trying to get...: If trying to get pregnant (presuming 28 day cycles), be sure to have sex twice a day starting from day 11-12, for six days. Be happy, enjoy life, and don't think about pregnancy too much. It will happen when it happens, and if half a year goes by with nothing happening, then ask the doctor about it. Start on prenatal vitamins, to help prevent certain types of birth defects when pregnancy happens.

What uterine dimensions are required to accommodate a Mirena IUD?

Abnormality: Unless a woman has a uterine abnormality, any woman's uterus will accommodate a Mirena IUD. Fibroids groing into the uterine cavity can sometimes preclude placement of an IUD. These can be detected on pelvic ultrasound.

I have had a Mirena IUD for over two years now with minimal issues. Lately however; I have an unbearable vaginal odour, could it be caused by the IUD?

Caused=no: The environment of your vagina/cervix/womb is moist & sheds protein & sugar bearing mucous. This is prime food for a variety of germs that feed off them. The odor likely reflects the overgrowth of some odor producing germs which may or may not trigger other symptoms. It is sometimes harder to clear these infections when you have a foreign body (IUD) in place. Time for a visit for proper dx & rx.

Wrong site: Your comments/question have come to the public Healthtap site. This is a general information site where questions go out at random for comments. It does not offer to diagnose or treat anyone for any condition. The Healthtap prime concierge site has some of those features if you are signed up for that service. You must contact your concierge physician through that site.

Does the Mirena IUD affect your basal body temperature from your normal state?

No: The small amount of Progesterone in Mirena provides a local effect on cervcal mucous and the endometrial cavity. It would not affect basal body temperature. I am curious why you are monitoring your basal body temperature while using a Mirena IUD.

I am getting a mirena IUD next week. Should I ask for xanax (alprazolam)? And how much ibuprofin should I take beforehand? I've never had kids and I am 20.

Not necessarily: Unless you have an established anxiety disorder, you shouldn't need xanax (alprazolam). The insertion of the iud is quick; most women will feel a quick pinch when it is implanted. Some will have irritation of their cervix which can cause cramping. I would wait until after the procedure to see whether you need ibuprofen.

Pregnancy with IUD: Sounds like you both are not on the same page. I recommend that you see a marriage counselor to resolve this because no matter what happens one of you will resent the other (more). Pregnancy can happen after 5 years but sometimes the presence of the IUD, no matter how old, can prevent pregnancy. If she were to conceive, IUD removal can cause a miscarriage.

Can the mirena iud make you gain weight in the tummy area please.

Not typical: Mirena is a small plastic device placed inside that uterus. It secretes a small amount of Progesterone that basically acts locally on the uterine lining. Systemic side effects such as weight gain are not usually associated with this method. Weight gain is very common for most men and women usually related to caloric intake and exercise.

What would cause a heavy period like flow after removal of Mirena IUD? Was under the understanding that it kept lining thin.

Age 60 & heavy flow: If indeed you are 60 years of age. Removing the Mirena IUD was sorely needed. Moreover, heavy bleeding post Mirena at any age raises the question of abnormal endometrial proliferation. It would be a good idea for your GYN MD to take an endometrial sampling (biopsy) to rule out endometrial hyperplasia which can lead to endometrial/uterine cancer.

Mirena IUD for 2 years, regular periods, but the last two times after it ended bleeding would start again 2-3 days later. Why could this be?

Common: Anytime you have a hormonal therapy, you might have intermittent irregular cycles. If they become repetitive, call your doctor for medical therapy.
