Would 800mg of phytosterols in my 2g daily fish oil supplement be considered good for cholesterol/cardiovasciular health, or is it at all risky?

The most thorough: way to assess and manage cholesterol issues is to look a the lab values from the blood test your doc does. High triglycerides need good quality marine fish oil in the proper dose. High LDL responds to Red Yeast Rice capsules. Phytosterols have their place but I don't find them to be as effective as the above. Please check w/your doc or a natural health professional. I am taking Milk Thistle, Resveratrol, Vitamin E, Fish oil, NAC, and SAMe for my fatty liver. Has anybody else read the scientific literature on these supplements for helping decrease NAFLD? What are your thoughts if so?

Too many unknowns: Herbal supplements (or similar) are some of the non-scientific products sold to people in stores, on the internet, and elsewhere. It is usually untested and unproven what a brand, an ingredient, or an amount will do inside a particular person's body. If an herb seems to help, looks harmless, and is inexpensive, then it might be ok to try. Finding applicable research studies on supplements is hard. ...Read more

Should I be taking medication for high cholesterol (243) or try exercise and fish oil for 6 months first?

Depends on profile: If your HDL is very high within that 243, you may be able to get away with diet, exercise and nutritional supplementation for a while. If your HDL is low, then you'd probably need medication as your LDL and triglyerides are probably too high. We need the profile to be sure. ...Read more

Does fish oil increases cholesterol?

Not really: Your liver increases your production of cholesterol, not necessarily the food you eat. Cholesterol is the building block of all hormones in the body and is necessary for life. However high cholesterol or very low cholesterol is not ideal. High cholesterol must be balanced with good cholesterol (HDL) so that it can be removed from the body. Fish oil has good omegas 3's for our body. ...Read more

Is there anything OTC I can get for high cholesterol? I'm a vegetarian and don't use fish oil.

Is there anything OTC I can get for high cholesterol? I'm a vegetarian and don't use fish oil.

One option: Red yeast rice naturally contains lovastatin. Naive people who think "synthetic is bad" can use this very effective cholesterol-lowering agent and imagine it's superior "because it's natural." Vegetarianism is only a mild help in managing lipid and when you control for everything, really doesn't protect against heart disease or much else. Especially, Rx yourself some good aerobic exercise. ...Read more

My cholesterol was over 300, but not on medication. Was taking fish oil capsules, but read this could elevate levels. Do I need meds?

High cholesterol: Hi. Total cholesterol is a fairly uninformative number, and treatment decisions should not be based on it. It helps to know your overall profile. If "high" is due to HDL, no problem. If "high" is due to LDL, that is a risk for atherosclerosis. Are your triglycerides high or normal? Hi triglycerides correlate with low HDL, which is another risk for atherosclerosis. So without more information... ...Read more

Just told my cholesterol was 241. I had a panic attack. What should I do? I already take almost 3grams of fish oil daily only weigh 166 healthy weight

Red herring?: U struggle w/panic ; anxiety, so i'm wondering if panic about medical problems -incl your cholesterol lab- is something u've experienced before. If so, i suspect medical info (e.g., http://bit.Ly/r0blv4) won't help u a) put this lab result in perspective ;/or b) try other ways 2 reduce LDL ; raise HDL ("bad" ; "good" cholesterol). If my hunch is right, consider an anxiety specialist who uses cbt! ...Read more

Am on 1000mg of fish oil to reduce my cholesterol. I just noticed a few days ago that my heart skips beat, could the fish oil be the cause?

Skip: Unlikely the the fish oil causing the skipped beat. The American College of Cardiology recommends supplementation with 1.6 grams daily and many practitioners would recommend 2 to 3 grams daily.
