I'm having shortness of breath/ tightening in my chest. My inhaler isn't working as much. I cough up mucus with black streaks. Cough when can't breat?

Mgt: If your inhaler is not as effective in controlling the cough, your respiratory plan needs to be adjusted. The black streaks may be dried blood or tar. If you are smoking, avoid all smoke exposure, including second hand smoke.
I would suggest a follow up with your PCP. ...Read more

I have a sore throat that is causing me to cough up mucus and soon after, the inside of my chest and ears itch. Why is that and what can I do?

Sounds like a cold: The common cold causes mucus production, sore throat and cough. Itching is common as well. After coughing, your chest might feel irritated from the forceful air movement. The ears often get sensations referred from the throat. Doesn't sound worrisome. Unfortunately there are not any meds that are very effective for mucus or cough. Warm salt water gargle can soothe throat. You'll be well soon. ...Read more

Globus etc: Hi MelaniH~ you have REFLUX which is the central issue, because GE reflux while recumbent can cause gastric fluid to enter the esophagus and spill into the lungs. This will give you irritation in the esophagus and cause globus sensation and can cause irritable airways and lower respiratory obstruction witth asthma symptoms. See your doc. See a GI doc. I teach + I have been home w/ acute bronchitis for 2 days. I cough up mucus + have some shortness of breath, but feel better. Can I return tomorrow?

Flu; talk to doctor: U should not return to work until u r absolutely free of symptoms, as their is a risk of transmitting bronchitis to ur students. I assume u were tested for the flu; most bronchitis is viral in origin, & most viruses have no effective treatment. Most viruses run their course in 7 to 14 days. All u can do is hydrate, rest, get the influenza vaccine, & wait. Good luck, thanx for asking HealthTap! ...Read more

Mother has Dementia, fully-dependent, and has caught a cold. How do I influence her to cough up mucus since she's forgot?

Dementia: I'm sorry to hear about your mom's dementia. As memory loss progresses, our patients won't understand even simple requests/commands. At some point, difficulty swallowing & forgetting to cough can increase risk for aspiration pneumonia whereby solids & liquids go into lungs rather than stomac ...Read more

Why would I have blood when I blow my nose? Or when I cough up mucus there is sometimes blood as well? I do not have a fever.

Bloody nose: Nasal tissue is thin and rich in blood vessels. It is highly sensitive to humidity and a lack of it dries out, often with forced air heating in cold weather. There will be nasal blood with blowing, spotty not copious. Some blood may be aspirated from the nose into secretions which run back into the nasopharynx and then coughed up. IF, however, blood is consistently coughed, further exam is best. ...Read more

Cough (Definition)
