Can a stomach virus cause green runny poop. A family member jus got over it, an now I feel nausous and have green runny poop. Should I be worried?

Gastroenteritis: Hi Courtney,
A stomach virus can certainly cause green runny (liquid like stool). The bowel movements can be frequent, and also be accompanied by nausea and vomiting as well abdominal pain, fevers and chills. Most of the time these illnesses are self limited (they stop on their own) and although debilitating are not generally life threatening, unless it persists past a week I would not worry. ...Read more

My 2 year old child has yellow pasty poop. What is the cause for this? He had a stomach virus recently, but he had this several weeks ago as well for about 2-3 days. It went away. And it just came back again.

Good: Good news! The only stool colors we get really concerned about are red (blood from colon), black (blood from small intestine or stomach), or white (liver is not working well). Colors such as brown, yellow, orange, green, blue, or even purple (beets) can all be normal and usually associated with diet. If he has a persistent change in his stool habits, you should contact his physician since this could be a sign of an underlying disorder, but a one-time strange stool that is not red, black or white is usually of no concern.

If he is having continued diarrhea, or a change in color unrelated to diet, give his doctor a call. They may want to check his stool for bacterial, viruses, parasites, and other things to give clues as to why he is having this ongoing problem. Good luck! ...Read more

I have a stomach virus and fever of over 101 along with my anorexia this has caused me to lose five pounds overnight. Do I need to go to the ER or will my regular doctor be okay as soon as I can make an appointment?

Gastroenteritis: Not sure what you have, because if it is entirely in your GI system and viral it is unusual to have a fever. Would need more info on other symptoms. Your weight loss is likely to be due to dehydration. If you cannot re-hydrate yourself fairly rapidly an ER visit might not be a bad idea. If you can keep fluids down, call and make an appt with your PCP. Hope you get better soon. ...Read more
