Cancer (Definition)

Cancer is a group of diseases that is characterized by uncontrolled cell growth leading to invasion of surrounding tissues that spread to other parts of the body. Cancer can begin anywhere in the body and is usually related to one or more genetic mutations that allow normal cells to become malignant by interfering with internal cellular control mechanisms, such as programmed cell death or by preventing ...Read more

Can you please tell me the radiation points on the head for a pituitary tumor?

Hi doctors, can you tell me what is residue left on the brain after radiation for stage 3 astrocytoma?

Astrocytoma: There is no "residue" left from radiation therapy what is more likely be described is "residual" tumor still present after treatment. That residual tumor would be closely followed for any potential growth and could need further treatment. ...Read more

I had a benign mengimoa 50 % removed then 28 treatments of radiation. Can the radiation cause throat cancer or does it stay only in the head .

Exposed area: Radiation affects only the area exposed to radiation. If the throat area was not exposed to radiation, you do not have extra risk for throat cancer. Radiation for meningioma was likely confined to the head and throat should not be affected. ...Read more

Does a microwave let out enough radiation to eventually cause cancer? From where on the microwave does the most radiation come out when microwaves on?

Does a microwave let out enough radiation to eventually cause cancer? From where on the microwave does the most radiation come out when microwaves on?

It just doesn't: Microwaves produced wavelengths of radiation that don't damage the genes, which must happen to cause cancer. Everything gives off radiation -- light, your own body warmth, and dangerous x-rays. There are many types and most are harmless. The world is full of crooks posing as humanitarians, and you need to be discerning. Thanks for your question. ...Read more

I had 28 treatments of radiation on the brain for a benign tumor. Can it cause cancer else where in the body down the road ?

I had 28 treatments of radiation on the brain for a benign tumor. Can it cause cancer else where in the body down the road ?

Narrowing of the: field of exposure with radiation treatment is done to minimize the risk of side effects of treatment. Yes there is increased risk of thyroid tumors, other brain tumors and brain infarcts (stroke). You should review your situation with the doctors ( radiation oncologist especially) Each situation requires weighing the potential risks vs benefits. ...Read more

Standing in front of microwave all day - can this cause you to get cancer?

Standing in front of microwave all day - can this cause you to get cancer?

No: These wavelengths won't mutate the dna (induce) or cause cells to overgrow (promote). The online claims that microwave cooking causes cancer are scaremongering and are obvious disinformation (discredited ideas about the nature of cancer and the processes of biochemistry) by people misrepresenting themselves as humanitarians and persecuted scientists. Don't let these people scare you. ...Read more

I'm just wondering, if you can slow down the movement of mitosis in a cancer patient, will that cure cancer?

I'm just wondering, if you can slow down the movement of mitosis in a cancer patient, will that cure cancer?

Many drugs: Mechanistically work this way: the vinca alkaloids, vincristine, vinblastine, and taxanes each interrupt the mitotic spindle. These may work in some cancers, but alone do not cause all cells to arrest in mitoses, or cure cancer. ...Read more

Can you tell me how long to live or what's the survival rate of lung cancer?

Depends on a number : Of factors. Discuss with your team of docs (orthopod, oncologist, pcp & any other specialitist that you may need). Chemo/radiation are generally best options, with some surgical procedure to stabilize a broken or a bone that is weakened (but not yet broken). The idea is to improve the quality of life for as long as possible. Survival is dependent on cancer type and its response to the meds.. ...Read more

Is there a way to insert something into my breast where the cancer was removed and do radiation therapy from the inside?

Is there a way to insert something into my breast where the cancer was removed and do radiation therapy from the inside?

Yes: This is a new technique called "accelerated partial breast irradiation", apbi. A hollow device is placed where the cancer was removed. Radioactivity is put in the device twice a day for five days. Trials show this equals whole breast radiation for small tumors with negative nodes in women over 60 who don't need chemotherapy. More studies are underway. Go to www.Astro.Org for updated guidelines. ...Read more

Can I demand the doctor call for breast biopsy result? I cannot stand the tension.

Can I demand the doctor call for breast biopsy result? I cannot stand the tension.

~48 hour wait: Most basic pathology results from a biopsy should be available in ~48hrs. The tissue needs to fix in formalin for a particular amount of time (6hrs-overnight) then be processed, slides made and stained, then interpreted. Each of these steps takes time. Additional staining or deeper cuts for furthe evaluation/markers may add another day before the full results are back. ...Read more

6 years old girl, malformation in her left orbit AtV, 20/100 vision. Too dangerous to do the surgery as the position is quite near the eyegroud and optic nerve. Is it better to use radiation therapy?

Radiation best: U must have already consulted an eye surgeon and maybe even a neurosurgeon for the AVM in eye orbit. If they recommend no surgery then it must be not a viable alternative. Then radio surgery with gamma knife ( using radiation) is the best alternative. It has its own side effects and dangers which a radio- surgeon will explain in detail. Good luck. ...Read more
