Is spina bifida occulta congenital condition? What are the remedies? I get bothering back pain at least once a year but does not affect daily activiti

Possibly: Spina Bifida occulta is often an incidental finding when someone develops back pain and has an x-ray done. This is due to incomplete fusion of the spinous process during development and is congenital. An MRI could be helpful to examine the spinal cord to see if there is and tethering. Discuss with you Doc.

What defines a spina bifida as spina bifida occulta?

What defines a spina bifida as spina bifida occulta?

Skin covering: Spina bifida occulta, like open spina bifida, is a congenital malformation involving a problem with closing of the neural tube during development. However, there is not exposed neural tissue in spina bifida occulta. There can be tracts connecting the skin to the spinal cord, or lipomas or bands (tight filum) which can cause neurologic deficit. There can also be bony issues.

If you have spina bifida occulta at age 16, could it get worse with age, or is it very stable?

If you have spina bifida occulta at age 16, could it get worse with age, or is it very stable?

Don't worry: This is a very common x-ray finding noted in about 22% of the population and is known as an incidental finding with no bearing on any stability issues and is asymptomatic meaning it does not cause pain. It also does not change over time. It can be associated with spondylolithesis and some transitional vertebra or base of spine anatomy variants that may alter spinal mechanics and cause pain.

Can cheerleading cause injury and back pain in a teenager with spina bifida occulta?

Possibly: Spina bifida occulta is a congenital skeletal and therefore musculoskeletal abnormality. It is more a predisposing factor, meaning some people will have problems due to it while others will not. Cheerleading is an energetic sport and involves a lot of stress to the spine. One should remain active but try to find activities that do not aggravate or predispose to pain.
