Can someone take viagra (sildenafil) if you have atrial fibrillation?

Can someone take viagra (sildenafil) if you have atrial fibrillation?

Yes: Unless you're taking nitrates for some other condition, viagra should be fine. I recommend my patients avoid Levitra (vardenafil) (tadalafil) because it can interact with certain rhythm drugs many docs use for afib. Viagra and Cialis don't have this effect. Nobody's ever died from the interaction but better to avoid the issue. While you're at it, look into the differences in cost and action of viagra v cialis. ...Read more

Not My Pick...: Let's look at the ingredients. 300mg of caffeine (3-5 cups of coffee), then 7 herbal ingredients that are all caffeine. This is a mix likely to induce and maintain a wide variety of arrhythmias. Best of all, they don't tell you how much of each of those herbs they've got in there. For an Atrial Fibrillation patient, how critical is it to have sinus rhythm restored within a short time, assuming the patient takes NOAC full time?

For an Atrial Fibrillation patient, how critical is it to have sinus rhythm restored within a short time, assuming the patient takes NOAC full time?

Afib begets Afib.: The longer you are in Afib the less likely you are to be able to be converted and maintained in NSR. It is not "critical" but certainly desirable to be restored to NSR as soon as possible. If you are fully compliant with your NOAC you could go for cardioversion at any time. No waiting required. ...Read more

If a patient has an pt of 60.1 and is taking plavix (clopidogrel) for atrial fibrillation, what orders would you take? Would you discontinue the plavix (clopidogrel)?

Coagulation defect: With a pt of 60 your risk of bleeding is high. Why you have it is a problem. Plavix (clopidogrel) is an anti platelet agent but at the risk of bleeding you have I would stop it. Your doctor has to talk to you and find out all the medicine you are taking, evaluate your liver and your coagulation system to find out why you have coagulopathy. ...Read more

I have recently been diagnosed with paroxysmal atrial fibrillation, I take 120mg verapamil per day. How safe is it for me to continue weight training?

PAF: There is mounting data showing that athletes who generate a lot of upper body strain (ie rowers, weight lifters) have an increased incidence of a fib, felt to be due to back pressure on the heart during straining that ultimately stretches out the top chambers which is where atrial fibrillation comes from. As you continue weight lifting, be aware that your paroxysmal afib may become persistent. ...Read more

Does taking magnesium help with heart palpitations and atrial fibrillation? How does it take work after taking it? "

Complex, Mixed Data: All muscle cells water inside & outside separated by fat (~30% cholesterol: stabilizes & allows movement without tearing) membrane. Proteins in membrane pump na+ ions out, k+ ions in, along with other ion movements. Other proteins suddenly change this: allow na+ to go in & k+ out ~0.001 sec later. Inner membranes keep ca+2 away from contractile proteins to stop contraction. ↑mg+ may ↓irritability. ...Read more

Why do you take betapace, xocor, digoxin, and Coumadin (warfarin) with atrial fibrillation and sinus tachycardia?

Why do you take betapace, xocor, digoxin, and Coumadin (warfarin) with atrial fibrillation and sinus tachycardia?

Prevent stroke: Actually atrial fibrillation and sinus tachycardia are two completely different heart rhythms. None of these drugs would be of any use for sinus tachycardia. In atrial fibrillation, Betapace may restore a normal rhythm. Digoxin can help keep the heart rate down. Coumadin (warfarin) reduces the risk of stroke. Zocor also reduces stroke risk in some patients, but this is unrelated to the atrial fib. ...Read more
