What causes one to develop autism? Is it something the child is born with? Is their anything a pregnant woman can do to help prevent this?

Mostly genetic: The strongest evidence is that genes comprise a much bigger part of the pie influencing this outcome. There is a variety of evidence that only weakly finds the environment causal e.g. diet and vaccines. But of course, being selective about wholesome foods and lifestyle preferences e.g. exercise, being aware of medications that are safe during pregnancy, and for the baby later on is top job. ...Read more

Not that I know: I have not seen any research that shows a link between ultrasounds in pregnancy and autism. Ultrasound is a valuable tool to use in ob, (check dates, position of placenta, growth of baby), but sometimes it is overdone, because it is risk free, and parents like to see pictures, and drs. I'm 30/f and my partner is 42/m. If I get pregnant this year what is risk of autism or schizophrenia due to age? Anything I can do to minimize risk?

I think your fears: Are based on older research. When very few people were having children later in life the statistics were skewed. Since this has changed I believe the risks of retardation and mental health problems are no longer showing as higher for older couples. Eat healthy foods, exercise. Relax and get good prenatal care. Enjoy your pregnancy and the beginning of becoming a parent! ...Read more

No worries: Autism is a set of symptoms without proven causes, and will likely be found to be several different disorders with a variety of causes. Meanwhile, there will be news of "possible" links to this or to that, as each year goes by. Someday, there will be proven links and proven causes. As always, everything in moderation, meaning take prenatal vitamins but don't overdo it, and eat a variety of foods. ...Read more
