Sinus inf & smell

Sinus infections can definitely alter your sense of smell. First of all, with the thickening of the mucous membranes and the presence of extra thick mucous, your smell receptors in the nose don't work as well; and (2) if bacteria are present along with purulent drainage, the germs in this carry their own rather unpleasant odor. Sinus infections can also be a cause of bad breath.

Sinus infection?

If you are not feeling too poorly, you may find that using saline rinses will help reduce and thin the mucus. Mucinex may be helpful as well. Ask your pharmacist. These will not cure a sinus infection, however. If you are experiencing headache/ facial pain, fever, body aches & pains then you will do best to see a doctor.

Highly likely

Just because mucus is colored, doesn't always mean it is bacterial. With exposure to air, secretions in the nose can turn colors. If facial pain, upper teeth pain and fever, then I would diagnose as a bacterial sinus infection and if 1 month of symptoms, antibiotic is indicated. I hope this helps. Antibiotic overuse is a huge problem..Please educate others.

Nose blowing seeks to push mucus out of the sinuses, not drag bad air into them.

Smell concerning

The symptoms you describe are almost always the sign of something serious, especially after just completing a course of antibiotics. Consult an ENT for a thorough evaluation.

Smell Gone - Back?

The sense of smell often worsens after anything that causes stuffy nose -- a head cold, allergy flare up, or a severe irritant like smoke ingestion. The sense of smell should improve when your nose returns to baseline congestion. If it has not, suspect a viral infection such as influenza or parainfluenza. Go see an ENT to have your nose examined and get treatment.

See an ENT

Go see a doctor soon, preferably an ENT, but your family doctor should be OK. Do not wait. Sinus infections can produce very severe complications if not appropriately managed.
