Doctor insights on:
Can Shingles Be On Both Sides
Absolutely, but very: Rare. Shingles is essentially always expressed along distribution of peripheral nerve fibers, dermatomes, on one side. It is extremely rare (reasons unknown) to express on both sides, in the same or very similar distribution. If the distribution does not follow dermatome pattern, then also very inconsistent with Shingles. Thus, what you are concerned about is unlikely to be Shingles. ...Read more
Shingles (Herpes Zoster) (Definition)

I have a rash I believe to be shingles based on the look & symptoms. 1 Dr said since I have it on both sides, it can't be. What is actually true?
I'm covered with a rash that looks a lot like shingles, covering both sides. Scabby and weeping. It isn't in a specific location either. What is it?
I got shingles on both sides of my body from the waist down front and back. I am still dealing with numbness, tingling waist down a year later. Help?
Sorry some meds help: It sounds like you have a condition called post-herpetic neuralgia — the nerves where the shingles hid are still sensitive. It can continue to do so in some people up to 2 years from the incident. There are several meds in the market for it — check with your doc — they are designed to decrease firing of these nerves. They do eventually go back to normal. ...Read more
In horrible pain. Is it possible to have shingles w/o rash on both sides of body? Dr says no. Skin numb/piainful. Hurts to move. Want blood test.
Get checked up: Shingles causes a painful rash which may appear as a stripe of blisters on the trunk of the body. It is possible for pain to persist even after the rash is gone. This is called postherpetic neuralgia. But more of a history and exam are needed. A full work up with blood tests is a good idea. I suggest going to a clinic to get examined. ...Read more
41 years old. Shingles for 3rd time in less than 2 years. Always on both sides. Sick of meds. Don't seem to work. Feet and legs are covered this time. Last time was face and shoulders. Time before was feet and belly and back.
Doubt shingles: First, confirm the diagnosis. Very atypical story for shingles for several reasons (recurrent; both sides; multiple locations; non-response to anti-herpes meds). Probably not shingles this time. See a doctor ASAP, the sooner the better for accurate diagnosis and effective treatment. If recurrent shingles is confirmed, you'll need evaluation for possible serious underlying health problem. Good luck ...Read more
Herpes zoster usually clears up in 2 to 3 weeks and rarely returns. If the virus affects the nerves that control movement (the motor nerves), you may have temporary or permanent weakness or paralysis.

Yes and no: It is possible to have shingles in the mouth and that's about as inside as you will see with this disorder. It presents as a red painful rash that does not cross to the other side of your body trunk and chest are common areas. ...Read more
Hi I have shingles on my left side of the neck. Was wondering if I can cover them with a white non sticky bandage so I don't spread it?
Not sure...: I am sorry to say this is just not enough information to determine if it is or not shingles. Just tingling could be a number of things, including early shingles, but it does not mean it is shingles. It could be so many things that we would need more for the diagnosis. I am sorry I cannot be of more help on this specific question. If you have a history of shingles, would suggest it more. ...Read more
Usually: Shingles is reactivated chickenpox virus. You don't catch it some other person. It is from the chicken virus that infected you years ago when you were just a whippersnapper. For some reason it seems to confine itself to only one dermatome. I always find it truly awesome (not Valley-speak awesome) to trace the distribution of an outbreak on a person's skin and the textbook dermatome map. ...Read more

See your doctor ASAP while outbreak is fresh and ask about viral testing from the outbreak for both HSV and shingles, plus an HSV blood test. ...Read more

If you had shingles in the same area where you are experiencing rib pain — it is possible that you have a case of post-herpetic neuralgia, a type of nerve pain caused by damage to the nerve from the varicella zoster virus which causes shingles.
See your doctor — there are special medications that can ease any moderate to severe pain from nerve damage due to shingles (neurontin vs Lyrica (pregabalin) vs elavil. ...Read more
