Can Sciatica Cause Whole Leg To Swell
Can sciatica cause my whole leg to swell. I am being treated for sciatica for a couple of years now. But I have never had my whole leg swell.
Not typical: Sciatica typically does not cause the whole like to see well. Swelling in the lower leg can happen if there is weakness and the muscles are not pumping blood back to the heart. In your situation, if it is truly the entire leg that is swelling, I would be concerned about a vascular problem and have this evaluated right away. An ultrasound of the leg would be the most prudent first step. ...Read more
Swelling is the enlargement of organs, skin, or other body parts. It is caused by a buildup of fluid in the tissues. The extra fluid can lead to a rapid increase in weight over a short period of time (days to weeks). Swelling can occur all over the body (generalized) or only in one part ...Read more
Symptom Vs Cause: Sciatica is the symptom of leg pain caused by a disc herniation or narrowing where the nerve exits the spine. A disc herniation is a outpouching of the disc from its normal place into the spinal canal or on the nerve and can be a source of pain in the back or down the leg. The nerve then goes to the muscle which can then hurt, spasm or feel sore or irritated. ...Read more
I keep reading that lt exercise and stretching are good for sciatica leg pain, but what if that just causes more pain? I'm in bed when I'm not at work
See Pain Specialist: You may be developing a pain syndrome called complex regional pain syndrome. This should be checked out asap so that treatments can be offered to reduce or eliminate this pain. The longer it goes on makes it harder to treat. Also, the pain could be coming from your spine and may need to be evaluated further. I would see a comprehensive pain specialist that can manage everything you need. ...Read more
Is it possible for a 2mm disc protrusion with annular tear to cause severe sciatica in entire leg?
Herniation with Tear: The disc is like a jelly filled donut. If the donut is compressed too much the jelly leaks out through a break in the donut's bread. The same is true with a disc, the tear is caused by the compression resulting in a herniation (protrusion) and the jelly (inside portion of the disc) is either leaking out or trying to get out. This can result in chemical inflammation of the nerves causing pain. ...Read more
Small random bruise on my leg. Also get random twinges of pain by the bruise. Didn't do anything to cause it. Can it be sciatica related?
Would sciatica cause tingling and no feeling in one leg very suddenly? Also have a large swelling on the base of my back either side of my spine.
Absolutely: This certainly could be sciatica so you should get it checked out straightaway as you have an excellent health care system that lets you get treated easily. A pinched nerve which provides muscles w/the info to move can cause tingling & numbness as you describe. The swelling should also be evaluated by a spine specialist. Imaging, Meds & PT are likely to be used to help you feel better. Keep us posted. ...Read more

Can anxiet cause electrical shock type pain and lightening pain around buttocks? My doctor said it wasn't sciatica because it doesn't go down leg.
Nerve irritation: Anxiety can cause many physical symptoms, but specific pain and "electric shock" type pain sound more like your nerve is being irritated. The sciatic nerve does indeed innervate the leg, but does not necessarily have to cause pain all the way down the leg when irritated. You may have a a "minor" case and localized tx with heat or an NSAID may help. Follow-up with your dr. If it persists. G luck. ...Read more
15 weks pregnant last 3 nights at 9 30 my legs get restless and achey. What could cause this? I have been having sciatica symptoms in both legs lately
Lots of Reasons: When pregnant, there are so many things going on. Your hormones are very different causing your ligaments to stretch quite a bit especially in the pelvis resulting in pain. Can piriformis muscle syndrome cause sciatica type symptoms (pain and tingling in legs). Can you suggest anything that may help relieve it?
Suggestions: Yes, if sciatic is caught by buttock muscles, pain can simulate a pinched nerve from the back, BUT you describe issues in "legs", and the bilaterality causes some concern regarding lumbar stenosis vrs peripheral neuropathy. First, get diagnosis confirmed, then if appropriate, try physical therapy or osteopathy. ...Read more
Would a central disc herniation (l4/l5) have to be quite big to cause sciatica down both legs? And could it cause pain in front of the thigh?
Lower leg symptoms: L5 nerve impingement (L4-5 level) from a herniated disc can cause weakness in extending the big toe and potentially in the ankle (foot drop). Numbness and pain can be felt on top of the foot, and pain may also radiate into the buttock. S1 nerve impingement (L5-S1) may cause loss of the ankle reflex and/or weakness in ankle push off (patients cannot do toe rises). Numbness and pain in foot noted. ...Read more

Not typically: Most disc bulges do not touch nerves to cause any nerve related symptoms. Long saphenous vein blocked on left leg. Could this cause sciatica? Pain back of both legs, hips and right side groin. Worse right side
No.: Development of a clot of what was once called the long saphenous vein may cause discomfort, tenderness to touch, redness, or warmth over the length of the vein itself -- something called thrombophlebitis. This is a local issue, self-limited, and should not lead to discomfort in the other leg or the hips. If the clot extends near its junction with the deep veins, it may lead to a DVT. ...Read more
Leg feels heavy, muscle spasms, hurts from toes to buttocks, possible bursitis in knee, Can sciatica cause all this or could it be a blood clot?
What else can cause sciatica and tingling in both legs, numbness in both feet, when MRI says broad based disc bulge at l4, L5 and spine dr says looks normal and the bulge isn't causing my symptoms! Help?
Leg tingling: Other options: poor circulation, peripheral neuropathy (diabetes or other causes), or compression outside the spinal canal. Based on your age, I would make sure that the spine doc looked personally at the films. I see too many patients with missed diagnoses because the report-only was reviewed. If in question, sometimes ct myelogram will show pathology better. Emg/nerve conductions also may help. ...Read more
