Can Probiotics Make You Constipated
Probiotics, by definition, are beneficial bacteria that live in our intestinal tract to help us maintain health intestines and colon. There are several species of these bacteria that are helpful to us including lactobacillus acidophilus. The meats we eat contain antibiotics that kill our natural bacteria that reside in our gut. Today, you will replace these ...Read more

Probiotic: There are many good products. The ones that work have to survive the stomach acid so the beneficial bacteria can make it alive into the colon area. Looks for brands that say acid resistant or formulated to resist stomach acid. One probiotic that survives stomach juices is theralac (google it). You may try different ones. Be sure to drink lots of water everyday. ...Read more
Hello, I started taking Jamieson Probiotic 10 billion active cells recently, and since then I've been constipated. Is it normal? Worried now! Ty
Probiotics: Although very hyped, there is currently little proof at this time that probiotics provide substantial health benefit, except in specific circumstances. Therefore, if you have side effects from a particular product, I would stop it. Consider adding extra fiber to your diet. When you do, be sure to drink extra liquid too. If you go back to probiotics, consider a different product. Good luck. ...Read more
If I take probiotics everyday for awhile, will I become dependent on them. I'm just curious if I were to stop taking them, could it cause constipation?
No dependency.: If you decide to take probiotics, your body will not become dependent on them, and you can stop them at any time with no problems. Except in unusual clinical circumstances, however, regular use of probiotics hasn't been shown to improve your health. Since there doesn't seem to be many potential side effects, deciding to take probiotics is a personal choice. Good luck. ...Read more
What in my diet could be causing my ebf 3 1/2 month old to be constipated? Also if I take a probiotic would that help him as well?
Good day. I suffer from severe bloatedness and constipation. I have changed my diet and take probiotics for a month now. Any advice? Thank you
Bloat & constipation: Sounds like you are on the right track. Please do see your doctor. You MAY have a food sensitivity and until you find out what the offending food is the symptoms can continue. Your doc can do a food sensitivity panel. Peace and good health. ...Read more
My 4 month okd baby really struggles to poo, he was recently badly constipated. How long does a probiotic take to work?
4ever: Maybe a week or two. It has to enhance your baby's natural microbiome. Try 'baby' pear or Apple juice on a temporary basis. It contains sorbitol which is a natural laxative. Organic is better. 5 ml twice a day should do it. The biggest risk is that your baby will LOVE it and you don't want to make a habit of that. ...Read more
I've been very constipated and bloated 24/7. Should I try Optibac probiotics extra strength for everyday? Will it help? I'm 19.
Maybe a little: This product is in the category of anecdotal endorsement. There are many reports from individuals who say they had good improvement in their digestive problems with this product. Some report no improvement. There is no scientific proof one way or the other. Theoretically, "improving" bowel flora can help improve bowel motility, improving constipation. Dietary fiber, fluids, exercise cost less:) ...Read more
Hi! I’ve been drinking movicol and probiotics for one week now due to constipation. It hasn’t worked- is there another alternative?
Yes: Probiotics contain different types of micro-organisms such as yeast (saccharomyces boulardii) and bacteria (such as lactobacillus, bifidobacterium). This can change your gut flora and your bowel habits. See a doctor if you are having fevers or pain. Https://www. Webmd. Com/drugs/2/drug-163888/adult-probiotic-oral/details ...Read more
Best way to treat severe constipation? Have tried probiotics, 3 litres of h2o, fiber, & exercise. Seem to be getting worse not better.
Moderation is good: You're on the right track. Eating a balanced diet that includes fiber, drinking lots of water and exercise is the first step. If your exercise is too vigorous, though, you can get dehydrated, which can worsen the constipation. Certain meds can cause it, also. If those measures don't work well enough, prunes or apple juice or pectin products like jelly beans or even nuts can help. Try meds last ...Read more
Hi, I am 26 yrs old and suffering from constipation, please can u suggest good quality multivitamin with minerals. And Probiotics types. Thanks a lot.
Vitamins: A good multivitamin is a good idea. It's like an insurance policy for when we don't eat right, don't sleep well, or are especially stressed. Go to a good store or get some guidance because the popular brands are typically very week and not helpful. The dose (read label and check that half or more of the ingredients are several 100 per cent above RDA. Dose more important than a long list. ...Read more
I drink a lot of water every day and take a probiotic but I am still constipated. Could I have a problem colon?
Colon: brain control: Like the rest of our body (as embodied souls connected to a mind & fragile brain+body) the brain is in primary control with millions/sec feedback signals. Desires/training to delay BMs until "proper/convenient" promotes constipation. Processed foods increase problems. Low carb vegetables with fiber content, not fruits as much, tends to ease problems. Prunes & some water binding softeners can help. ...Read more
My 4 month old is constipated as of tuesday. She gets probiotic daily and juice/water mix but still no bm. How can I help her go? She seems in pain
Regular Feed???: Constipation is best defined as a thickened or dry stool produced when the large intestine extracts too much water. Breast fed babies can have poo every feed or only 1/wk. If it is soft, it is normal. Solids like cereal or applesauce are natural constipators & I don't advise their use at this young age. Full strength apple juice or prune juice @ 1 oz once or twice daily will often loosen stools. ...Read more

A Probiotic preparation is certainly worth it but at your age I would suggest a GI evaluation to rule out more specific issues which could cause the symptoms you describe! We do not recommend a specific preparation on Health Tap however your Pharmacist may be able to suggest an effective OTC preparation.
Hope this helps!

Would it be a good idea to try a probiotic supplement since I suffer from constipation & digestive problems? I'm on Linzess.
Pro mean with: And bio means life. Probiotics help the GI system digest food. Anti means against. So, if one takes excessive antibiotics (which are sometimes needed) they can kill off the good bacteria in our GI systems and we can have digestive problems. This can happen w/out antibiotics at times too. So, the probiotics replace the good bacteria that are missing or low. Peace and good health. Try and see. ...Read more
3 month old with enlarged ureters, on chronic amoxicillin. 2nd round of thrush and now starting to have constipation. Is there a probiotic to use?
Lactobacillus.: Though some will recommend the use of any probiotic strain or those in yogurt, lactobacillus rhamnosus (especially lactobacillus gg) is one of the more extensively studied probiotics and may offset side effects associated with antibiotics. The fact that your child is on antibiotics suggests that the level of kidney involvement is significant, therefore continue to take the antibiotics as suggested! ...Read more

Abd, bowel symptoms: Well you can get full easily if you are contipated, but you are also 39 yo and unfortunately we are seeing colon cancer in younger pts.
