Can Probiotics Help Control Allergies
Unknown: Probiotics have been found to decrease the frequency and severity of viral uri's (common cold) in prospective, randomized clinical trials, and probiotics have also been found to cause beneficial changes in the immune system. However, probiotics have not been found to reduce hay fever / allergies. On the other hand, that question may not have been studied yet. ...Read moreSee 1 more doctor answer
Probiotics, by definition, are beneficial bacteria that live in our intestinal tract to help us maintain health intestines and colon. There are several species of these bacteria that are helpful to us including lactobacillus acidophilus. The meats we eat contain antibiotics that kill our natural bacteria that reside in our gut. I recently developed a penicillin allergy. Does this mean i need to be careful of any probiotics now as well?
Penicillin allergy: No, there is no cross-reactivity between the usual organisms contained in probiotic preparations and the drug penicillin or its derivatives. You should, however, make note of the type of reaction you experienced and transmit this information to any doctor you see for any reason. People with an allergic reaction to one agent may have a higher risk of reacting to others. ...Read more
Lactose intolerance: I see your confusion but lactobacillus is a probiotic bacteria, not a sugar. Lactose intolerance (difficulty digesting milk sugar) can be secondary to lactase enzyme deficiency, or due to a bigger problem of small bowel inflammation, infection, infiltrative disease, and/or maldigestion. Don't assume its lactose intolerance unless tested, or at least assessed response to lactase enzyme replacement. ...Read moreSee 1 more doctor answer

Have heard research clostridia bacteria can help cure food allergies- is there a probiotic that contains this stran out yet? Can I get it anywhere?
Unaware: I have not heard of a sound study related to using clostridia to cure food allergy. Even if there is one, I would certainly wait for confirmation by other studies before trying it. Clostridia is not considered a probiotic thus there is no such OTC preparation that I am aware of. Avoidance remains the best although researches are ongoing in trying make people tolerant to foods they are allergic ...Read more

Usually: Most people can tolerate probiotics but extremely high doses can cause gastrointestinal upset. I am not aware of any link to hives or allergic diseases. In fact, there are studies showing that probiotics may lower the chance of developing eczema for infants. Do note that not all probiotics are created equal and different strains may be needed for different folks- thus no universal good guy. ...Read more
What seasonal allergy medications are safe to take with levothyroxine, Jolessa, escitalopram, a multivitamin and a probiotic blend?
I developed food allergy for first time after taking antibiotics for 4 months. Do i consult a doctor or this will just go away? Do i need probiotics?
4 months?: I am wondering why you took antibiotics for such a pronged period. And this may well have changed your GI flora. But to develop "allergies" seems unrelated to the antibiotics as such.By all means take "probiotics" or pick up food with probiotics within: fresh natural organic yogurt, kefir drinks, goodbellly drinks etc... ...Read moreSee 1 more doctor answer
Cod liver oil okay to take? I have a shellfish allergy. Also double q. Are probiotics good for fungus on tongue or yeast overgrowth in stomach?
Cod liver oil OK: There are 5 main groups of seafood: bony fish (cod), crustaceans (shrimp), bivalves (clam), cephalopods (squid), gastropods (squid). There is cross-reactivity within each group but rarely between groups, so cod is ok with shellfish allergy. Probiotics are healthy but have minimal effect on mouth fungus (thrush). Most experts feel stomach fungal/yeast overgrowth doesn't exist. ...Read moreSee 1 more doctor answer

Not known to: Probitics sometimes effect the bacteria n your gut, which has no relationship to what the birth control pill does. However, the science on probiotics is very iffy as to whether or not they have any real value as most are currently constituted.
