Can Older People Get Strep
13 month old with strep and pneumonia. How can I get her to eat? Should i be worried about her being hospitalized?
PNEUMONIA: As long as she is drinking well, taking her meds, she will be ok. Don't force her too much to eat, then she will vomit and be sicker. If big issue, talk to her pediatrician. ...Read more
Unlikely: Group B strep is a risk to newborns when it accesses their blood through the lungs and or birthing process. It is generally seen in a biphasic pattern, either at birth or 4-6 weeks. GBS is rarely seen later. It is not commonly found in breast milk and would likely be suppressed by oral enzymes and enter the gut as part of the regular germ content, if at all. ...Read more

How does a four-year-old get cellulitis and is it like a strep infection if not how is it different?
10 year old has strep and started cefdinir at noon today. I have 3 other children, including a 5 week old. What are the chances everyone will get it?
Unlikely for all: Cited attack rates within families range from a high of 1/4 to a low of 1/32. The 5 wk old would never be expected to get any febrile illness but should go in immediately if it did, not because of strep A but from the possibility of it being birth related germs. It is certainly worth monitoring of all. The infected kid will not be contagious after a day or so on meds. ...Read more

I am 20 years old, have had strep 4 times in the last year & each time I'm out for a week with a high fever should I get them out?
Go see ENT: Was Strep proven by rapid test or culture each time? Or was diagnosis made empirically (just by exam w/o testing)? If former, get referral to ENT to discuss options. ...Read more
5 yr old female, positive strep test, has a chest rash and complains of itchiness... Suggestions to get her to stop scratching?
Is it possible for a 22 mth old to get thrush in the ear? If so, will the amoxicillan she is prescribed for strep cure it, what could've caused it?
No: Thrush relates to yeast in the mouth, not the ear. There may be a fungal infection in the ear but that is quite uncommon and is usually seen with chronic middle ear or external ear infections. Amoxicillin, albeit known to make people prone to yeast infection, will be the unlikely cause of ear fungal infection, the diagnosis thereof i actually doubt. ...Read more
My 5 yr old has strep again for the 3rd time. Dec, march and again now. How many times do little ones get them before talks of removing the tonsils?
3.5 year olds adenoids to be removed. Should we get second opinion? I believe they enlarged after strep throat at christmas. Can they shrink naturally
Maybe, maybe not: Removal should be based on the overall picture of the child's health. If snoring at night and showing other signs of potential sleep apnea, it would tend to worsen for several years before some relative decrease in size would be expected (after age 8-10). If truly symptomatic of sleep disturbance, this can improve the quality of life and avoid worsening issues. If not, no hurry. ...Read more
Yesterday I held my 4 yr old cousin. Late last night, her mom said she threw up so she went to doctor today & she has strep. Can I get strep/throw up?
Sure, if unlucky: Many people get strep (and some throws up, but most don't throw up). It's a common illness. If a person got exposed to strep throat germs, and then has cold symptoms or sore throat symptoms, she can get checked out by her primary care doctor. Most doctors can do a rapid strep throat swab test that takes 5 minutes. ...Read more
5 year old has strep throat and Cant get him to take the nasty medicine they prescribed. Cefdirin. They refuse to switch why can't he take amoxicilLin?
Switch or shot: I see no reason not to switch, and wonder why they would use such a foul tasting and expensive med to start with. If the kid won't take any oral med, a LA Bicillin shot would also work. ...Read more

My 5yr old son has extremely dry skin on his feet, its starting to really peel. He got a real high fever from strep throat, and that brought on a rash, that lead to the dry skin. Wanting to know what I can get to help his dry feet
Often : Often times when a person has strep throat they develop a rash. This rash is caused by a toxin that's released by the strep bacteria. It sounds like that rash has subsided and has left behind the characteristic dry peeling skin. Don't worry this is the normal course for this type of rash and the peeling and dryness should subside completely after about 10 days or so. In the mean time keep his skin clean and moisturized. Try thick emollient creams, they usually come in a jar, or plain vaseline. Be patient; in time he will be completely back to normal. ...Read more
Endemic: Group b strep (gbs) is present in or on the body of almost everyone. For pregnancy care we obtain a culture of the vagina, perineum, and anus at about 35 to 37 weeks to determine if gbs is present — which it is about 1/3 of the time. The gbs is present in the bowel in most people and it can travel to the vaginal and even sometimes cause bladder infections when it gets into the bladder. ...Read more

Usually not: This germ is in the mucous secretions of the carriers. They might be able to cough a few out, but they would dry out soon & die. Most pick it up through casual contact. Person A puts fingers in mouth, touches doorknob painting it with strep. Person B opens door and eventually touches face/mouth, completing the pass. Any contact with saliva can pass it. ...Read more
