Can folliculitis or acne on the scalp cause hair loss? Is there a difference between them? The only thing they respond to is 10% benzoyl peroxide.

Folliculitis/acne: folliculitis and acne may both become infected by bacterial contamination. The benzoyl peroxide will help for acne; however, the folliculitis may require both antibiotic and anti-inflammatory medication.

Can folliculitis on the pubic area cause a burning sensation in the penis' head?

Can folliculitis on the pubic area cause a burning sensation in the penis' head?

Not likely: A folliculitis is an inflammation of the follicles usually associated with superficial bacterial infection. Burning of the glans is likely due to another cause - maybe medicine you have been applying to your groin? Burning with urination is a different story and could be related to urinary tract infection or an std.

Folliculitis: Folliculitis is an infection in the hair follicles. Each hair on your body grows out of a tiny pouch called a follicle. You can have folliculitis on any part of your body that has hair. But it is most common on the face and scalp and areas rubbed by clothing, such as the thighs and groin.

My 8 year old son suffered from folliculitis. He now has had a patch in his head for the past 2 months. Will his hair ever grow back?

My 8 year old son suffered from folliculitis. He now has had a patch in his head for the past 2 months. Will his hair ever grow back?

Maybe: The hair bearing areas are tolerant to some localized disturbance & will often regrow hair after the inflammation settles down. If significant scarring occurs, it can leave a hairless patch. If bothersome to a kid as they grow older, the area can be cut out & the remaining scalp stretched & re-aligned to cover the defect.

Can I oil my hair/scalp or message on my body if I have folliculitis? Is it true that oiling aggravates the condition?

Oil on scalp...: Oil folliculitis is inflammation of hair follicles due to exposure to various oils and typically occurs on forearms or thighs. So unless you were prescribed bactroban (mupirocin) ointment, then no oil should be placed upon your skin. Please speak with your physician right away to discuss your questions. Good luck.

What do you suggest if my pubic hair is extremely coarse and prone to ingrown hair and folliculitis with waxing while my skin is fair?

Avoid waxing!: If you have ingrown hairs try not to wax, shave or pluck hairs until healed. This can often heal without treatment. Your physician can prescribe medication to clear dead skin cells (retinoids). Steroids may be used for significant inflammation & antibiotics may be considered if the area has become infected.

I have noticed pimples under several pubic hairs recently (female) & it does itch slightly - could this be Folliculitis or something worse?

Itchy pubic pimples: Thank you for your question. Slightly itchy pimples in the pubic area may be caused by many things including folliculitis. There are forms of inflammatory conditions of the skin that could cause a rash as well as responses to external/internal sources such as allergies or otherwise. Having an examination performed by a qualified medical practitioner would be helpful in diagnosis and treatment

I get very bad red itchy bumps after shaving my pubic area which I believe is folliculitis. Should I just pluck the infected hair out?

I get very bad red itchy bumps after shaving my pubic area which I believe is folliculitis. Should I just pluck the infected hair out?

Folliculitis: You are correct about the folliculitis. However, I don't recommend wasting your time plucking them out individually. If you are going to pluck them you might as well wax and save yourself time. There is no scientific benefit of shaving vs waxing for the removal of hair. Always monitor for infection.

Probably: That sounds like an outstanding idea if you're willing to do it. Nobody really understands back-of-the-neck deep hair infections. Best wishes.
