My dad has what doctors think its lymphoma in the brain, they are not sure what it is, can it be identified without drilling his skull, ?

My dad has what doctors think its lymphoma in the brain, they are not sure what it is, can it be identified without drilling his skull, ?

Check body: The first thing that must be done is to image the whole body to see if there is something that looks like lymphoma somewhere else other than the brain. A lump somewhere else may be easier to biopsy. If not, they must see what is there. These days, neurosurgeons are very precise in obtaining biopsies and the real risk lies in what area of the brain they see the problem in terms of side effects. ...Read more

My mother just died at age 65 of Non-Hodgkin's Lymphoma (multiple lesions, large one in brain). What are my risks for NHL or other cancers? I'm 36.

Not much increased: The malignant lymphomas by and large don't run in families. A few genes are known but they are of small effect. Stop worrying and live as richly and wisely as you can. I also see you report erectile dysfunction; I hope this is getting worked up and especially that prolactinoma and hemochromatosis have been ruled out. Best wishes. ...Read more

Lymphoma: Lymphoma is a pathological diagnosis which can only be diagnosed by biopsy (lymph node biopsy or bone marrow biopsy) followed by pathological analysis by trained pathologist. All the blood work you listed and imaging can not and will not be able to make the lymphoma diagnosis. EBV infection may increase certain lymphoma incidence, but its alone should not be used for diagnosis. ...Read more

On my CT I have scattered foci throughout frontal lobe white matter largest being 7mm. Could this be a metastasis? My lymphoma has relapsed.

Complex: More details are required to help you in this question. Is this CNS lymphoma, or lymphoma originating outside the nervous system? For lymphoma, involvement into the CNS is usually via the meninges, to give a meningitis picture. However, there are occasions where metastatic disease can occur. It's best to discuss this with your oncologist who knows your history and clinical course. ...Read more

What causes non-hodgkin lymphoma and why does it spread?

What causes non-hodgkin lymphoma and why does it spread?

Complex question: There are many different types of non-hodgkin's lymphoma and they have many different causes. Some of the lymphomas are caused by viruses and bacteria (some burkitt lymphoma, marginal zone lymphoma of the spleen, acute t-cell lymphoma). Others occur as people age because of the genetic mutations that are continually occurring in the immune system. Lymphomas spread because they are part of the immune system nd immune cells naturally travel around the body. ...Read more
