Are very foul smelling loose stools in infants without fever, mucus or blood a sign of Amoebic dysentery?

Amoeba Shmomoeba...: Think about it this way: Whatever is causing the diarrhea, an infant is very sensitive to fluid loss, and other losses too. So if it has been excessive and persistent and the baby won't take enough fluids by mouth to compensate for the losses (dry mouth, decreased tears and urine volume, acting cranky and tired), it's time to see a doctor. Let him figure out the cause, whether amoeba or just a virus ...Read more

Hard to tell: It would be unwise to interpret your baby's mucus solely without looking at the entire picture. Symptoms: dark loose stools, difficult/incomplete evacuation, severe abdominal distention from trapped gas, mucous. Diagnosed IBS. I think Proctitis?

Typical IBS symptoms: As you suspect, these symptoms indeed are consistent with irritable bowel syndrome. But they aren't particularly suggestive of proctitis (inflmmation of the rectum). Inflammatory bowel disease (e.g. Crohn's disease) can cause similar symptoms as IBS, and also can cause proctitis. So I suggest you raise these questions with the doctor who diagnosed IBS then follow her advice. Good luck! ...Read more

Sigmoidoscopy: You may need a sigmoidoscopy based on your history. Sometimes irritable bowel syndrome can cause diarrhea - or there could be a problem with the bacteria in your gut (especially if recent antibiotics). A gastroenterologist can help sort out possible causes and treatments. In the meantime, try cutting out caffeine, get high fiber and mild exercise. I Have Alot Of Mucus In My Stool. My Stool Is A Solid Rocky Shape Not Diarrhea. What Causes alot of Mucus to build up like that???

Mucus on stool: Mucus discharge occurs in up to 50% of patients with irritable bowel syndrome, with or without pain. Mucus may also be produced in response to partial obstruction, chronic constipation, rectal dysfunction, infection, & even from secretory villous tumors of the rectum. At the very least stool studies & probably a sigmoidoscopy should be considered, but a more extensive evaluation may be warranted. ...Read more
