Mitral Valve Prolapse (Definition)

When the mitral valve that separates the heart's left atrium and left ventricle does not close appropriately. When the heart contracts to push blood from the left ventricle to the rest of the body, portions of the mitral valve move backwards into the left atrium. This can cause regurgitation of blood from the left ventricle into the left atrium. Most of the time a mitral valve prolapse is asymptomatic and does ...Read more

Is it normal to have chest pain with mitral valve prolapse occasionally?

Is it normal to have chest pain with mitral valve prolapse occasionally?

Follow: Mvp can lead to mitral regurgitation and this causes a murmur. Symptoms are variable, depending on the severity. Mvp most commonly is asymptomatic but sometimes causes palpitations, shortness of breath, even chest pain. If you are having any symptoms, you should have an echocardiogram to evaluate the valve and severity. ...Read more

I have mild mitral valve prolapse w regular daily palpations and sometimes chest pain. Is this normal or do they mean more severe condition?

Probably normal: Mitral Valve Prolapse is asymptomatic in most people, but sometimes causes palpitations and chest pain, more commonly in women. There are evaluations that can be done making sure nothing more severe is occurring. If problematic, there are medications that can reduce these symptoms. See your doctor since they seem to be bothering you. ...Read more

I am having mild mitral valve prolapse with mild regurgitation. My symptoms are sob and chest pain. All doctors are saying I am fine. Why is it so?

Mitral prolapse: Chest pain and shortness of breath are symptoms of mitral valve prolapse. However the sob is unlikely resulting from mild regurgitation. The treatment is surgical correction. Most ild regurgitations are treated medically and with serial echocardiograms. ...Read more

I'm 23. About 115 pounds and not very active. I have mitral valve prolapse. If my heart rate is currently at 57 with chest pain should I be worried?

Prolapse: Mvp is not necessarily symptomatic. Your chest ache may well have a musculoskeletal or no cardiac cause. Probably you are fine. Being inactive is not a healthy state, we all need regular exercise. ...Read more

I am having mild mitral valve prolapse with mild regurgitation. I have shortness of breath and chest pain. I feel like iam going to die. Why is it so?

Doubt it's the heart: I don't think your symptoms can be caused by your heart given your description of the echo findings. There could be many other causes of your symptoms. One potential would be panic attacks. Often these give you the feeling you are dying. Check with your doctor for follow up. ...Read more

Carotid bruit is: An abnormal sound heard due to blood flow turbulence in your carotid artery. This sound can be attributed to a carotid artery aneurysm, dissection or partial blockage, or the same diagnoses in the aortic artery further upstream. Please see a vascular surgeon or cardiologist for proper diagnosis and treatment. Thanks for trusting in HealthTap. ...Read more

My doctor says I may have mitral valve prolapse. However there's a ten month wait for an ethnocardiogram, my symptoms are persisting and sometimes worsening, chest pain, rapid heart beat, shortness of breath post excercise, fatigue, what should I do?

Nothing: If you haven't had the echo, then the diagnosis of mvp has not been established. Even if you do have it, mvp does not cause these symptoms. Doctors blame all kinds of things on mvp but they are not related. There is no treatment required for mvp and none that is helpful. If the wait for an echo is that long then you are in the wrong health system. ...Read more

Hi sir, iam having mitral valve prolapse. I am also having anxiety and chest pains. Does I need to control my diet. Does I should avoid any foods. .

No special diet.: There is no particular diet you should follow. Eat healthy, but avoid stimulants if you find they make your condition worse. If they don't seem to bother you I do not see any particular reason to avoid them. Check with your doc to make sure this info does not conflic with their advice. ...Read more

I have a vibrating feeling in the middle of my chest. Could it be related to my silent acid reflux or my mitral valve prolapse?

Muscle spasm..: This is very unusual!!! Unlikely to be acid reflux... You would expect burning pain. If you do truly have mitral valve prolapse then you are at a risk of developing supraventricular tachycardia. This could explain your sense of vibrating feeling which could be palpitation. Check with your doctor... Best wishes ...Read more

I have significant mitral valve prolapse. I stopped taking lanoxin (digoxin) when I was 21. I am no 50 and I get bad fluttering in my chest do I need it now?

You should: Find out what is behind the fluttering feeling. Possibly a rhythm disturbance such as salvo of premature contractions or atrial fibrillation. I both cases I would see the internist/cardiologist as especially having afib exposes you to blood clots in the upper chamber that can lead to strokes. So my humble advise see the cardiologist asap! Please do not delay! ...Read more

Im.27 a mom of four an I have a mitral valve prolapse. N been diagnoised bi polar I was sittin here then all of a sudden got a real sharp pain chest?

How long did it last: Length of time for this pain could be critical for the best advice to be given. If this is the VERY FIRST time you've ever experienced this symptom, and certainly if it were of any duration (meaning greater than just a flash and gone) and if there were problems catching your breath or sweating or nausea...then, young lady you need to get a sitter and hit the ER...I think that's your best option. ...Read more

Is there a difference between generalised anxiety disorder and mitral valve prolapse. I have had clear ecg/chest x rays but still getting symptoms!?

MVP/GAD: They are different. Gad is a psychiatric condition and mvp is cardiac. There is an association between panic disorder, a different anxiety disorder, and mvp. Some pts. With panic disorder also have mvp. Theories have proposed the surges of adrenaline with panic attacks may stretch the cords holding the mitral valve in place in the heart, causing prolapse into the ventricle. ...Read more

Breast implants have any relationship to mitral valve prolapse?

No but antibitic rx~: Generally speaking there is no relationship between the two. However you may be confused about another issue. Most have stopped this practice. Yet, some orthopedists & plast surgeons do this for implants? ...Read more

Can mitral valve prolapse cause a person to have anxiety attacks?

Can mitral valve prolapse cause a person to have anxiety attacks?

Unlikely: This is a situation where two conditions that are very common (mitral valve prolapse and anxiety) may coexist in the same individual but is does not mean one caused the other. Some people with mvp may experience palpitations which could be unsettling and someone with anxiety may feel overwhelmed by having what they percieve as "something wrong with their heart". ...Read more

Valve (Definition)

A valve is a structure that regulates the direction of flow. The heart is a special kind of pump. It moves blood by squeezing and relaxing. There are 4 chambers and each chamber has a valve. This keeps blood from moving backwards when the heart squeezes. When a chamber squeezes it lets the blood move forward but when the chamber is relaxed it prevents the blood from ...Read more
