Can mitral valve prolapse cause a person to get anxiety attacks?

Possibly: http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/3287421 there has been much written about the association between panic disorder and mitral valve prolapse, as above. While the association is small, in my practice I have seen patients who have mvp, panic disorder and both. ...Read more

Mitral Valve Prolapse (Definition)

Mitral valve prolapse is when the mitral valve that separates the heart's left atrium and left ventricle does not close appropriately. When the heart contracts to push blood from the left ventricle to the rest of the body, portions of the mitral valve move backwards into the left atrium. This can cause regurgitation of blood from the left ventricle into the left atrium. Most of the time a mitral valve prolapse is asymptomatic and does ...Read more

Can mitral valve prolapse cause a person to have anxiety attacks?

Can mitral valve prolapse cause a person to have anxiety attacks?

Unlikely: This is a situation where two conditions that are very common (mitral valve prolapse and anxiety) may coexist in the same individual but is does not mean one caused the other. Some people with mvp may experience palpitations which could be unsettling and someone with anxiety may feel overwhelmed by having what they percieve as "something wrong with their heart". ...Read more

I'm a very anxious person. Had panic disorder. Could the reason of anxiety be mitral valve prolapse? Could it get better with medication?

I'm a very anxious person. Had panic disorder. Could the reason of anxiety be mitral valve prolapse? Could it get better with medication?

Anxiety treatment: Anxiety and panic can easily go together, and some have also noted that mitral valve prolapse (mvp) and panic disorder can happen in the same patient. But that doesn't mean that mvp causes the panic. In most people, mvp causes no symptoms or physiological problems. Regardless, medications like ssri's can treat the anxiety & panic, along with psychotherapy. See your doctor for evaluation & help. ...Read more

I've noticed yesterday that i've mitral valve prolapse. Can it cause heart palpitation and anxiety? Are b complex injections derogatoty for it?

MVP: For the majority of people, mitral valve prolapse is a variation of normal. There is a spectrum and some people have a more severe form. When present, this leads to mitral regurgitation (leakage), a loud murmur, and over many years can lead to heart failure-then the valve must be repaired. B vitamins with neither help nor harm you. Palps and anxiety are common and not related. ...Read more

No special diet.: There is no particular diet you should follow. Eat healthy, but avoid stimulants if you find they make your condition worse. If they don't seem to bother you I do not see any particular reason to avoid them. Check with your doc to make sure this info does not conflic with their advice. ...Read more

I have mitral valve prolapse. How can I tell if my symptoms are due to anxiety?

See a cardiologist: Most people with mitral valve prolapse can have it very mild and can have no symptoms and are not at any significantly increased risk of heart problems. However, if there is significant prolapse and/or leakage of blood (mitral regurgitation), one can be at increased risk of shortness of breath, heart failure, chest pain, palpitations and arrhythmias.
