Can Metamucil Cause Constipation
What does one do about constipation? I have tried Metamucil and am about to try a suppository. Does having a prolapse cause complications here.
Stay regular: Keep taking the Metamucil, and more water. Don't take Metamucil only when you're constipated--take it every day. Also, take magnesium to "bowel tolerance." You can't OD on magnesium, because it will give you diarrhea. Find dose that works for you--every day. Add bowel stimulants like prunes. You may be hypothyroid, a common cause of constipation. Stay regular to avoid problems w/ prolapse. ...Read more
Its not: Supposed to. You should be taking about 20-30 gms a day. If you are not tolerating it well you can switch to another brand such as citrucel or konsyl. You can also take a stool softener and keep in mind to drink a lot of fluids, specially in this warm weather. If symptoms don't improve talk to your family doc as you may need workup to rule out other causes of constipation. ...Read more

Post op Constipation: Constipation after a surgery is a frequent occurrence. This is partly due to the disruption of normal metabolism, and compounded by use of narcotic pain medications. It is important to stay well hydrated during this period (and stool softeners won't work properly without adequate fluid intake) and to walk as frequently as permissible (let your doctor and your comfort level be your guide). ...Read more

I took Metamucil for constipation. Now it's loose kind of like diarrhea. Should I take imodium (loperamide) ad or diarrhea meds or just wait it out?
None of the above.: If the "diarrhea" is not fulminant--i.e., mostly water accompanied by cramping, don't worry about it. The colon is designed as a "low pressure" environment. The less force needed the better. Metamucil is a "bowel normalizer"--it helps both constipation and diarrhea. Consequently, you can take more metamucil if you want to "firm up" your stools a bit. Having loose stools is not a disease. ...Read more
