Can Lyme disease be detected years after getting it?

Can Lyme disease be detected years after getting it?

Yes, but not always: There are many tests for lyme disease, but none are totally reliable. The elisa test is positive in about half of those infected. The western blot test is positive in ~70% of cases, but most labs don't do a thorough enough version- I recommend igenex labs. Pcr tests are positive only ~20% of the time. A new test, a culture by advanced laboratories may detect lyme in >80% of cases so may be best.

What can be done to treat Lyme disease that has gone undiagnosed for several years?

What can be done to treat Lyme disease that has gone undiagnosed for several years?

Antibiotic: Treatment is based on the stage of disease and tve severity. If Lyme disease is confirmed (do not rely on a blood test alone) the treatment is usually either doxycycline (oral antibiotic) or rocephin (ceftriaxone) (given IM or IV). Even late Lyme disease is treatable.

I was diagosed with lyme disease 9 years ago How can I live with long term lyme disease?

I was diagosed with lyme disease 9 years ago How can I live with long term lyme disease?

Treatment?: If you were treated 9 years ago, then you likely killed off most if not all of the bacteria and this will not affect you long term much at all. However, there are a small number of people who deal with long term after effects of the infection that can be difficult to treat. But I am not finding any studies that say this effects the length of your life. Hope this helps.

My dad just found out he has Lyme disease and e has had it for 9 years drs just keep tellig his it was athrightus he is in a lot of pain what cn we do?

?: According to the most up to date research, once tx'ed, lyme disease is no longer present. However, it is possible that if it wasn't treated, he could have other chronic problems. First, make sure he was treated with appropriate antibiotics and for the right amount of time. Second, if treated right, sometimes, people can have autoimmune reactions related to the lyme disease. Talk to his doc.

I have chronic Lyme disease have been treated for 4 years finally starting to feel better and now only on abx every two weeks why are so many doctors?

In California?: Where did you get lyme? Not much in the west. I am glad you are better but many id physicians do not believe that there is a chronic lyme borelliosis.

If I've had Lyme disease for many years, can it still be treated even if there's been nerve damage?

See below: The disease (bacteria) can be treated but the secondary effects of the disease being present for so many years are likely permanent. See you physician to have lyme disease blood testing done to confirm or refute the presence of the disease.

Had a bullseye rash about 3 years ago, haven't really felt good since. Found info on Lyme disease while trying to find some help. Should I be tested?

Had a bullseye rash about 3 years ago, haven't really felt good since. Found info on Lyme disease while trying to find some help. Should I be tested?

Well: Testing is usually not positive doesn't show the line infection for a couple weeks. Recommend Healthtap visit or see a doctor in person for diagnosis and treatment. It's important to get anabiotic treatment early when you have a target rash because it can be Lyme disease and you can prevent the complications by getting anabiotic treatment early

How long could the IgG in Lyme disease stay positive? Could it stay positive more than 5-10 years? I know the IgM ab convert to IgG just want an answer

Yes, positive 20+ yrs: Research suggests igg antibodies can persist at least 20 years after infection. While igm antibodies appear first, unlike other infections they often persist ; are a good indicator of persistent infection. One may have chronic lyme with or without persistence of igg antibodies. Chronic lyme is difficult to fully eradicate ; no current test proves that it is no longer present in your body!

Who is the best physician to treat Lyme disease 7 years out in orange county ca or los angeles area?

Specialist: A specialist in infectious diseases should be sought out. Lymes disease is sometimes very difficult to diagnose as it can mimic many other diseases. I would contact the ucla or usc schools of medicine.
