Can Lupus Cause Low Hdl
Sweets & alcohol: Most common cause is high intake of sweets (candy, juice, pop, gatorade, etc.), uncontrolled diabetes (high blood sugar), and consumption of alcohol (which our body process as a type of sugar). Avoid sweets, especially those in liquid form, control diabetes (if you have it), limit alcohol to 1-2 drinks per day at most. Exercise at least 5 days a week, keep a healthy weight. ...Read moreSee 3 more doctor answers
HDL, or high density lipoprotein, is a molecule in the body that is responsible for the transport of lipids (fats) from various organs including blood vessels back to the liver for processing and possible elimination. Because it helps prevent accumulation of lipids in blood vessels, HDL cholesterol is ...Read more

29 yo women. what causes low HDL (0,85) ? My LDL (2,15) is normal and triglycerides little bit high (1,74 should be 1,70).
What should I do ?
What causes low HDL Cholesterol (35) for 57+ yr female while the other components are normal (total: 155 LDL: 98, TG: 114) ? How to improve it ?

Hyperlipidemia: Your serum lipids are very abnormal and require dietary and most likely medication for treatment. If untreated you are predisposed to cardiovascular complications. Very high triglycerides predispose to pancreatitis. Your physician and/ or rheumatologist will refer you to a dietitian and advise you on medications, avoidance of alcohol and the follow-up needed. ...Read more
Indirectly: Accutane incresases levels of a protein called apociii , which is an inhibtior of another protein apocii. Apo cii is the binding site for an important enzyme called lipoprotein lipase, which when acts on triglyceride containing particles removes or hydrolyzes triglycerides (tg's). Too much apociii (via accutane) raises tg's. High tg's are a very common cause of low hdl. Thus Accutane lowers hdl. ...Read moreSee 1 more doctor answer
Back to basics: Thanks for your data! numbers all look pretty good. Tg is only mildly elevated and would respond best to low calorie diet with focus on reducing high glycemic index foods and fructose. Tg may come down, but I am not sure there is great benefit to that. Real focus of treatment is LDL but that is great. Eat plenty of fish. Regular aerobic exercise. Maintain healthy weight. ...Read moreSee 1 more doctor answer
Complicated: The conventional wisdom is that HDL helps to remove cholesterol from your arteries and epidemiological studies clearly show that the lower the hdl, the higher the risk and vice versa but drugs that raise the HDL have had disappointing results making the conventional wisdom suspect. It may just be a marker for something else. Bottom line: we're not sure why but it is. ...Read moreSee 1 more doctor answer
Heart disease risk.: Hdl (high density lipoprotein) protects the body by removing excess cholesterol from the walls of arteries. A high HDL (>60 mg/dl) can protect the body from heart disease. A low HDL (<30 mg/dl), on the other hand, is a risk factor for developing heart disease. A patient with low HDL can exercise, lose weight, or take medication to raise it. ...Read moreSee 2 more doctor answers
LDL Not Cholesterol: Artery disease: typically beings ~age 7; yet asymptomatic for decades. Ldl particles entering artery walls is the primary driver; HDL helps ? ds. Cholesterol, a fat made by all our cells, has never been correct issue but promoted because (as 1 fat within all lipoprotein particles) it was/is cheaper to measure & if very ? (esp. Fasting) correlates with ? LDL particles. See NMR particle test many tx. ...Read moreSee 1 more doctor answer
1 risk factor score: The national cholesterol education program suggests that having a significantly low (<40) HDL is equivalent to having a major risk factor like smoking, high bp, high ldl, diabetes or fan history of early coronary disease. This is usually a genetically based phenomenon, and thus far drugs have not been effective on improving outcomes by trying to raise hdl. Exercise and red wine (moderate) may help. ...Read moreSee 1 more doctor answer
What is the correlation between high hba1c 8.19, total cholestrol 130.2, low HDL 31.6, and low LDL c?
Diabetes Insulin LPL: Patients with diabetes, Insulin resistance and or high triglycerides often have changes in lipoprotein lipase levels, driving the exchange of triglycerides with cholesterol between vldl and LDL and hdl. This creates cholesterol depleted LDL and HDL particles, hence the measure of cholesterol in HDL and LDL is low. In addition small HDL particles are unstable and break apart, hence low levels. ...Read moreSee 2 more doctor answers
Possible for a 210lb,35yo,5ft,smoker with BP of 130/90, 220chol, low hdl, high LDL to have normal stress echo?
My cholesterol is low at 99. My LDL and HDL are also both low. HDL 34.6. LDL 46. Triglycerides 86. Should I be concerned?
No. Low LDL is good.: Try raising HDL. Look for foods with monounsaturated fats (olive oil, etc.). Read up on such foods on nutrition websites. Avoiding sugars and simple starches should help raise HDL (good cholesterol). Fruits have a lot of sugar, and most breads are simple starches. Protein such as chicken breast, pork loin (whiter meat), and tofu can be eaten instead of carbs. Exercising will also raise the HDL. ...Read more
Is low HDL as much a cardiovascular risk as high ldl? Does HDL numbers really matter if LDL is under control? Lots of conflicting info out there.
Agreed: Yes, lots of conflicting material. Right now, it seems that high ldl, especially LDL particle number is high can be a culprit - get a more sophisticated blood test than a "calculated ldl." you can have a normal LDL at 99, but the particle number may be 1800 which is high. Hdl should be over 40, but many people genetically have them in the 20's. ...Read moreSee 2 more doctor answers
