I'm hypothyroid. When on birth control alone,I noticed dat my acne &hair loss improved little. Is dis pos? Iv heard dat bcps worsen thyroid problems?
BCP and thyroid: BCP do not worsen thyroid problems. Presumably you are taking levothyroxine for your hypothyroidism. BCP increases the amount of thyroid binding protein in the blood. In some of the older blood tests, this altered some of the values, but if a TSH or FT4 is measured, there is no problem with interpretation of lab values. ...Read more
Does a thyroid level in the TSH 4.1 to 5.2 range indicate hypothyroidism? Is very dry skin and increase in acne also a symptom?
Possibly: A TSH of 4.1-5.2 is mildly high. Most people with these levels will still have a normal thyroid level (free t4), and have no symptoms. We call that subclinical hypothyroidism. There are, however, some people who are sensitive to even mildly abnormal levels, and have symptoms. Dry skin is a very common complaint, that may or may not be related. Acne is usually associated with high thyroid. ...Read more

Small risk: Accutane can cause conjunctival irritation and secondarily eye dryness. If your eyes are dry to begin with and you add the dryness of accutane, then your dryness can increase. At your age i would have expected acne to be attenuated but you certainly can try Accutane with an understanding of the risks. ...Read moreSee 1 more doctor answer
23 yr-old, since puberty had facial "bloating" and other symptoms suggestive of thyroid or cortisol issues, but hasn't found effective treatment....?
Subclinical Hypothyroididsm: In a difficult case like yours I take into consideration ratio of T4 to TSH. If the ratio is less than 2.5 I have found out that patients have hypothyroidism. I would take small dose of synthyroid like 0.25mg for a month and recheck T4and TSH then decide whether to continue or add some more. This will depend on how you tolerate it and what's your T4 and TSH. Obviously you have compound problem in situation like this hypothyroidism needs to be corrected first. Let me know how you do. ...Read moreSee 2 more doctor answers
