My son is having a bone marrow test to find the cause of a low platelet count for 7 months. How do they collect the bone marrow?
Several choices: The skin over the testing area is injected with numbing medicine after it is cleaned and sanitized. The infant is usually provided with a form of conscious sedation to decrease their reaction to the event. A thick short needle with an angled bevel is inserted in either the tibia below the knee or the pelvis until the doc feels it enter the bone. The bone marrow is withdrawn into a syringe. Read more

Not the meds: Neither Zoloft (sertraline) or Prozac cause low platelet counts. In fact, a platelet count of 128 is not especially low and is not low enough to be concerned about an illness. The most common cause of a slightly low platelet count is an inaccurate count due to clumping of those cells, especially if you were dehydrated at the time. A simple repeat will be reassuring. How does HIV/AIDS cause petechiae? Is it due to low platelet count or some other mechanism? I have normal platelets but worried HIV could be the cause
Here's what to do: Get yourself one of these modern tests for HIV that's sensitive after the first month. You're not going to have any peace otherwise. Then live and love safetly. HIV may cause thrombocytopenia but seldom petechiae until you're very sick. Little vessels can rupture from exercising, rough-housing, or popular practices involving negative intraoral pressure.
