Theoretically: Everything could. However, if you are asking about Lidocaine injected to induce local anesthesia, the swelling might be not only due to volume given but small bruise (hematoma) as well. Could lidocaine cause permanent nerve damage?

Could lidocaine cause permanent nerve damage?

Rare but possible: Lidocaine is one type of local anesthetic or "numbing medicine". It is used for numbing skin, in nerve blocks, and in epidurals. It should not be directly injected into a large nerve because the nerve could be damaged. This is why ultrasound is often used to place nerve blocks, so that the local anesthetic is injected near, not in, the nerve.

I seem to have a VERY high tolerance to lidocaine. I have never done drugs. What could cause this?

I seem to have a VERY high tolerance to lidocaine. I have never done drugs. What could cause this?

Metabolism: We do not know exactly why, but some people metabolize substances much faster than others. It seems to have to do with the genetics of the enzyme systems in the liver in most cases.

Can getting lidocaine shots from the dentist for tooth removal cause death?

Can getting lidocaine shots from the dentist for tooth removal cause death?

Very low probability: As with any drug, there is a therapeutic level and toxic level. For dental anesthetics there is a large difference in the amount of drug that is typically used for dental procedures and the toxic amount. If the anesthetic is inadvertently injected in an artery, there could be life threatening effects, but this is also extremely rare.

Can lidocaine be used without epinephrine? I have SVT & I need a tooth pulled. Epinephrine causes SVT to act up. Can I just have lidocaine used?

Can lidocaine be used without epinephrine? I have SVT & I need a tooth pulled. Epinephrine causes SVT to act up. Can I just have lidocaine used?

SVT and Lidocaine: Good question! Local anesthetics can be used without epinephrine (epi). The reasons epi is added to local anesthetics include, to increase their duration of action, decrease their absorption into the circulation and decrease bleeding. In dental procedures these are good things. SVT is a dangerous condition that can lead to a heart attack so avoiding stimulants such as epi is recommended.
