Gastroenterologist: You need to be seen and fully evaluated by a GI doctor, and this will mean subjecting yourself to endoscopy and possible small bowel biopsy. This may or may not have anything to do with the viral infection you had, but there is no way to tell without a full assessment. Hope this helps. ...Read more

Can a vitamin D level of 21 cause depression? My doctor suspects I'm depressed. I say I'm just exhausted. I can't be in the sun because of lupus.

It's possible: Low vitamin D levels are common, but even if you cannot have sun exposure, it is easy to supplement Vitamin D. Talk to your doctor, but usually taking a high dose Vitamin D3 (2000 IU) twice a day should be adequate to see if it helps. Some doctors recommend much higher doses (50,000 IU or even more) but I would start low and see how you do. ...Read more

How many glasses of vitamin d milk should I drink a day to help with my depression?

How many glasses of vitamin d milk should I drink a day to help with my depression?

Not the best way: If you're deficient in vitamin d, drinking milk is not the best way to replenish this. In the us, most milk is fortified with about 100 iu of vitamin d3/cup. This is not the active form, either. Given that the usual recommended daily dose of vitamin d is 1000 iu, you would have to drink 10 cups if getting your "d" solely from milk. Better to use a supplement if you need extra "d" by testing. ...Read more
